[Poll] Are you satisfied with the education system in your country?
May 2, 2009 - 05:33 AM
|
|
Nothing is perfect, and so is school or education system. When we are disappointed at our schools, we usually say: "In other countries people do that, but our country do this, blah blah."
So I think this forum is perfect to pull it out. You can write down what makes you disappointed/ satisfied about schooling in your country and what you think about education in other countries. If you find it difficult to explain your idea, you can start with specific details like teachers, textbooks, equipments, exam structure, tuition fees, etc.
This thread is inspired by the thread "Comparing Education across Borders" of Katherine Walraven.

To tell you the truth, I am not satisfied with the education system in my country because they place to much emphasis on exams. If you were to ask a kid why are they learning, instead of the saying "to gain knowledge,etc" they would answer "because I need to get straight A's". The more A's a student gets, the better their chance of receiving a scholarship, whereas students who excel in other fields seldom get recognized.
Also, I think the education system does not allow students to think for themselves as answers almost always has to be from the textbook. Students do not have the freedom to judge the situation for themselves.
Another issue is the questioning of teaching science and maths in english. I feel these subjects are best thought in english as it is a universal language and students need to familiarize themselves with the terms. Some people think that the subjects should be thought in the national language in order to preserve the language.

Whilst not perfect, Australia's education system seems to provide every child a good education. Also, we are lucky to be in a situation where every child can receive a quality education for free.

@Shobana: Hmmm I have a Malaysian friend, she lived in Johor Bahru but she has to take a bus/MRT to Singapore every day to go to school there. Her family told me that their kids would have more chances if studying in Singapore.
Same in Vietnam, students can't answer away from their textbooks, or they'll get low grades, esp. in Literature. Students can't express other thoughts about a literature works. Teachers say that those works are chosen, and proved by hundreds of years, so you can't make it different.
You are right about the languages we should use. It's a tough question. Almost 90% Malaysian can speak English right?

Wow Ben, I don't that education is free in Australia?? Is it free until university or only highschool?
One thing I'm jealous about Australia the most is that every school there has campus lockers
A lot of my friends' families want their children to study in Australia.

Well, people do comparison on educational system to allow room for improvement. I am not really satisfied with the educational system in my country because it is more towards exam based. Although in blueprints it is mention about assignments, curriculumn and sports, it is still exam based in school.
If blueprints are not practice, then we shouldn't have blueprints or perhaps we should have another blueprint on how to guide us to achieve blueprints. The educational system is set up by the ministry and these people only sit in office without doing ground work or understand what's going on in schools.
Of course I do agree that nothing is perfect. But if I compare the educational system in my country, Malaysia with other countries, I do think there is still room for improvement. People seems to look for achievements rather than capabilities nowadays.

About Vietnam education system, what bothers me the most is the textbook. This year is 2009 but most of knowledge taught in textbooks are from 1996 =.= You have to learn to deal with a problem that no longer exists. They just changed the textbooks last year but they are gonna change again, which costs a lot of money for students.
The second is that students have learn in a very passive way, like teachers read out loud, and students copy into their notebooks. That's kinda funny. We can't do much experiencement, even in natural science subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology. And ofcourse students can't talk their own ideas.
The third is the university-entrance exam. When you finish highschool, you have to take an exam to get into university. It's held only 1 time a year and you can only take it when you finish highschool. And well, if you fail, it's really disastrous, but only 10% can get into university. So it's really tense and causes a lot of negative reactions, even bribe.

Chipro, yes..almost all malaysians speak english which is why I do not understand the need to switch languages. The malaysian education system has much 2 improve on.

Hahaa Lim, you're right. Most people in ministry attended school a long time ago and everything has changed so fast since then. Maybe they should set up a board of consultants - and those consultants are selected students, so that the blueprint and curriculum can better address students' needs as well as future's career.
@Shobana I'm sure everything has a reason. English is popular in your country, that's good, but English is not your mother-tongue. Maybe keeping your mother-toungue is some kind of patrotism?

Public schools are free up until the end of high school. Of course there are private schools which cost money. As I have mentioned in a different thread undergraduate courses at university are payed for using the "HECS-Help" system in which the government pays for your course and then when the individual is earning a salary the individual pays back the loan through the taxation system.

I am not totally satisfied with the educational system in the Philippines because I believe that there are a lot of issues to be improved.
Number 1: Access to information to all schools in both rural and urban should be the same, when it comes to receiving those valuable information.
Number 2: Access to facilities in both rural and urban school should also be the same.
Number 3: Teachers must be highly qualified and must be trained well not only in conventional methods of teaching but also by using Information and Communication technology for the advancement of the quality of learning.

I suggest that part of the teaching strategies that teachers could use is that they should utilize ICT in the process:
1.) online discussion on some topics and issues;
2.) online exam (not all the time);
3.) getting online lessons and submitting of assignments online (I already have experience on this with one of our professors);
4.) video conferencing with some speakers who are abroad;
5.) etc.
what do you think about it?

These are good ideas for change in education and in particular improved teaching methods. I think that in particular the use of technology to allow the teachers abroad (the best in the business) to teach in many different countries is something that should be looked into.
Why don't you post these ideas on my "ideas for change in education" thread...
