Question of Culture
May 1, 2009 - 05:24 PM

The “question of culture,” should culture ever be questioned OR is culture essential to defining who we are as individuals or who we are collectively?

i think Culture is essential to define our selves as individual or collectively
but as culture grow and things in and things out of it..
but to make any culture last for a long time... you need to question it.. because in every culture we see gabs small and big..
culture is advanced so by time while moving from generation to another.. they acquired new things and they add to the culture..

so after all... we move the culture.. we fix any gab.. so this culture will be essential to define who we are..

the question of culture is one that is so critical to some of us that slowly I have started thinking that; we have now reached a stage where some aspect of certain cultures should be reform or redefine.
This is so because, so many so called-cultures especially in the African Continent are slowly eating the fabrics of our societies as well as affecting growth and development.
The the fact of the matter, is that these cultural practices were used initially for some good purposes but what is now happening about some cultural practices is completely against human dignity.

That's true Saladin, but in the case of human rights which both protects culture while at the same time challenging---should human rights also be upheld even when the integrity or traditional practices of that culture may be lost as a result?

Sahr, that's an interesting point. But who determines what is necessary for development what is harmful for a community. My concern is that concepts like globalization, democracy, and even capitalism are all closely reflecting the values and practices of Western culture (as diverse as it may be), so why should Western cultural practices remain for the "sake of advancement" while other non-Western cultural practices are lost simply because they are not compatible with Western cultural ideals?

Hello Sheridy

if it's wrong.. maybe for some people it's right coz it's part of them of their culture

but if it's not that right or even wrong.. then let this part be lost...

i don't have any examples for now... but if there is a gab in a culture no matter how people don't want to make it change gaps should be filled

Saladin, that is really thought-provoking...so much so that I would love if you could explain it more!

well... ok i will try to explain

you said sometimes human rights protect culture and at the same time challenging

what i meant of what i said is that
as we all know a culture for a nation or country or group of people
human rights for all of us

so if human rights challenge a culture in order to make it better... so to protect it...
as i know human rights won't try to make a culture lose any of it's integrity or traditional practices

for me if i know there is something wrong or i don't accept in my culture and for a good reason... i would love if this practice will be lost.. culture represent us and we represent our culture so we both need to work to make better... with or without human rights

in a simple words i'll do the best for my culture even if i need to make many changes and lose things

hope i explained well

Saladin, but if a culture is a collective identity it may be hard for everyone to agree on what practices, ideas, beliefs should remain in a culture and which ones should change.

I am also curious about your comment on culture existing with or without human rights...what do you mean?

it's hard but not impossible... if you can convince people of the benefits of this change.. and spread awareness ... we all want better things always

i didn't mean that culture is exist with or without human rights.. i meant that we should work to make our culture better with or without the human rights

but to answer to what you said

in a time people didn't know something called human rights.. or at least as what is it now... or maybe in another words

but they had their own culture... no matter how was it

Culture doesn't exist without human race. Culture is made by the way of life of the first human beeing who started to discover himself and the things around him.
