To include your points in the statement, it will look like these statements, to wit:

We recognize that teachers and students play a role in encouraging parents/skeptics that the internet is not a negative tool and indeed if it is used wisely, can be very beneficial in the long run.

We suggest parents/teachers need to educate their children/students on the proper use of technology.

We believe that the internet, if used wisely, can open many doors to students and teachers alike.

With the additional inputs from other students, the draft looks like these statements now. (Note: Please add more or delete if there are words or phrases that are not necessary.

STUDENT STATEMENT - draft
5th Microsoft Partners in Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009

We, the students from different countries in Asia and the Pacific, express gratitude that we are given the oppurtunity to be heard in international level where highly respected teachers convene for the 5th Microsoft Partners in Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009.

We therefore express the following statements we've all agreed:

We express our sincere thanks to the organizers for letting the students around the region to get a chance to participate in this conference, not only to observe but also to be heard.

We appreciate the efforts of the organizers to provide a forum for students to interact with other students in the region regarding their experiences, ideas, opinions, etc., on Information and Communication Technology.

We understand that the innovative teachers program as provided by this conference will be helpful in improving more the skills and knowledge of the teachers as they go back to their respectives schools or universities, which we all believe that could help improve the educational system with the use of technology.

We respect the diverse opinions of students and teachers with regard to the issue on Information and Communication Technology as we believe that this is part of the process.

We understand the need to help other countries who are not yet fully equipped with the techology by sharing existing strategies on how to incorporate technology more effectively as one of the tools for learning, or if possible facilitating technology transfers.

We believe that there are pros and cons regarding the use of techonology, but we trust that teachers could be able to make a strategy on how to prevent the negative effects from further harming the students.

We suggest that conventional methods of teaching should be coupled with technology so that more learning could be facilitated.

We aks the teachers to be fully equipped with the knowledge and skills on how to use the technology in teaching so that the issue of “students teaching their real teachers” should be eradicated as we believe that in this age today most of the students, if not all, are fully aware on how to use the technology.

We expect that this conference for teachers will accomplish its goal in becoming agents of change as you empower, enact, and engage.

We hope that this conference will really bring together a community of teachers as learners, facilitate the creation of collective knowledge, create a platform for the advancement of best practices and adoption of innovation, provide training and access to technology resources, deliver integration confidence to teachers using technology in the learning process, and engage teachers intellectually and offering opportunities to be active stakeholders in their profession so that as you go back to your country we can more learn from you as our beloved mentors.

We hope that this statement from the students in the region will be highly regarded and considered as you go along with your discussion on Information and Communication Technology as a tool to improve the educational system in the region as to hone more the potential skills of the students.

We consider that there is a need for collaboration from global patnerships and community based patnerships for education and in particular the technolgy and how its used to be moved forward.

We believe that this conference is a brilliant idea but it needs to be certain that everything will get down to local level.

Re: YOUTH STATEMENT (draft) 5th Microsoft Partners in Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009

Below is my take on the draft....I understand that the repeated structure Jessie's used would be effective in emphasising that it is the student's statement, but I don't know that it will be as effective at communicating our ideas. I have tried to incorporate all your points and much of your wording.

We, the students from different countries in Asia and the Pacific, are grateful for being heard on an international level where highly respected teachers convene for the 5th Microsoft Partners in Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009. The opportunity to be part of a forum and interact with other students in the region regarding our experiences, ideas, and opinions has been really meaningful.

From this we have developed a statement, in the hope that our input will be a valuable tool for progress.

Our Changing World

The world we live in is evolving rapidly and we consider there to be a need for both global and community based partnerships for education to move forward. We want "real world" experiences integrated into our education, not only to motivate us, but to provide important competencies and values that cannot be easily taught in a classroom. Some of these may include working with people of a range of ages, community participation, deeper respect for ourselves, others and human rights, and thinking in creative and varied ways.

We are members of a global community and our values are one of our strengths. We believe in equity and therefore the need to help other countries who are not yet fully equipped with technology by sharing existing strategies on the incorporation of technology as effective tools for learning, and if possible facilitating technology transfers.

ICTS

We believe the increase of skills and knowledge provided through the Innovative Teachers Program, especially with regard to technology, will improve education for all learners. We respond better in dynamic learning environments where ICTs are being effectively used. We are technologically literate and for progress to be made we would like our teachers to be so also. There are diverse opinions about the pros and cons of Information and Communication Technology, so discussion and collaboration will be important parts of the process if we are to be discerning users of technology, and not negatively affected by our exposure.

Learning is an exchange of information, rather than a one-way transmission. You have classrooms of "digital natives" to guide you when you need support with technology, just as you are our guides through a range of learning processes.

Effective Pedagogy

We know there is no magic formula for learning that will work for every student in every situation. We ask that you look at each of us as individuals, try to support us and help us to see the relevance of what we are doing. Learning for the 21st Century cannot be just "what, where and when", we need to understand the "whys and hows".

We hope this conference will achieve its goals:

-to bring together a community of teachers as learners,
-facilitate the creation of collective knowledge,
-create a platform for the advancement of best practices and adoption of innovation,
-provide training and access to technology resources,
-deliver integration confidence to teachers using technology in the learning process,
-and engage teachers intellectually and offering opportunities to be active stakeholders in their profession

And we would like to suggest further goals, goals to be put into practice as a result of the conference:

Katherine suggested looking at the goals of the conference and come up with ones mentioning students. I think this could be the conclusion of our statement...ideas?

And please edit and critique at will!

Dear Liza,

The structure I use is actually based on how the statements that most of the international students use(d) who are(were) given the chance to speak in international conventions. However, the structure doesn't really matter so long that the points the students want to convey are clear and convincing enough. You provided us with a good structure too.

Jesse, at the international conventions you attended how was the statement presented? Was it a handout?
I think that it would be quite cool for their to be a workshop (or part of a workshop) based on our student statement and how the teachers can implement our ideas and suggestions.

Reading over Lizas statement I support the layout she has chosen, it is easy to read and detail is used where it is needed.
I have to extra goals to add- I realise these are my personal views and do not express the entire student body :P

My Goals for the Teachers:

•To encourage the development of student voice to help students become intellectually engaged and active stakeholders in their learning.

•To establish cross-cultural links in the student body, so students from across the region can work together to achieve the global right of fair and free education for all.

Explanation:
I feel that the proper development of the student voice is important in these ever changing times. I would like to see more projects, within the learning community, where students across all levels work together to improve education. I would like to see the establishment of a student forum within the community, country and region. A forum where students are listened to and valued for what they have to say.

Let me know if you guys agree with my suggestions.

Kudos again to Jessie for suggesting this idea and drafting a statement which covered the majority of our views smileAnd kudos to Liza for writing such a well thought out statement. big grin

In international conventions that I attended so far, we gave all the participants copy of our statements for their guidance/perusal, and one to two students will read it in the plenary session.

For your points, Marcus, we will take note of it.

I really like these goals Marcus! Especially encouraging student voice, because the process in itself is a valuable experience for students and gives us more ownership of our learning and hence we are more motivated, as well as hopefully helping teachers understand what we need and want.

Do we need another section? Or will everything be covered in “Our Changing World”, “ICTs” and “Effective Pedagogy”…..do the names need to be changed?

Or perhaps interested students could work in small groups on sections (number and topic of sections could be decided on as a whole, maybe through a “poll thread”) then we could bring it all together as a whole for fine tuning…..in small groups it would be easy to do it via email/TIG mail, or Google docs or a Wiki.

Hey friends, I think the Youth Statement looks good enough till this point. Add more lines of relatively similar meaning and this's getting more like a cliché. You know, banality now howls in protest and is hard to sustain. If you want to test paraphrasing skill, do it next time.

I know that I have been pushing this all throughout this conference forum, but let reiterate this call for all the students to please provide inputs for the STUDENT STATEMENT.

Right now, as you are all aware, there are already a lot of threads, which have intelligent points and issues where we could include in the statement. In order to facilitate the OVERALL STUDENT STATEMENT where all students' inputs are included, we request everyone to summarize the agreed points you found in your thread(s). I hope to hear more of you all soon.

regards,

Jessie James

Hi everyone,

It's so wonderful to see all the very good points contributed by everyone to this student statement! (And hello also to the familiar names on this list whom I've met before!) So far, the content looks excellent.

I thought I might also contribute 2 thoughts for you to think about, if it may be useful in any way:

i) Objective of statement. You may want to consider what the purpose of this statement is? Is it an aspirational thing (ie. students expressing how they feel about education); or do you want some concrete action taken (by whom? how?); etc. Once you know the objective, the way you draft the statement can become more focused.

For example, one of the points was about including the student voice. If this is the case, the aspirational approach would just state that; whereas the action-based approach might include something about creating/strengthening mechanisms for student inclusion in decision-making bodies/processes relating to school administration, or student affairs, etc (as an example). So, as either approach is perfectly fine, it simply depends on what approach you guys want to decide for yourselves to take.

ii) Process of drafting this statement. It looks like there is already some response among students for the statement - this is great! I do agree that a googledoc (or any other similar solution) could *possibly* encourage more participation from other students as well. Whichever the process, the key thing is that it is *easy and accessible* for others to participate and therefore have ownership of this statement also.

Just my 2 cents - I'm looking forward to meet you all next week!
