YOUTH STATEMENT (draft) 5th Microsoft Partners in Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009

|
I believe that there is a need to create another thread to discuss this statement (draft).
I made the draft after reading the discussion here in the forum. I request you to provide comments, additional inputs, etc.
YOUTH STATEMENT - draft
5th Microsoft Partners in Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009
We, the students from different countries in Asia and the Pacific, express gratitude that we are given the opportunity to be heard in international level where highly respected teachers convene for the 5th Microsoft Partners in Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009.
We therefore express the following statements we've all agreed:
We express our sincere thanks to the organizers for letting the students around the region to get a chance to participate in this conference, not only to observe but also to be heard.
We appreciate the efforts of the organizers to provide a forum for students to interact with other students in the region regarding their experiences, ideas, opinions, etc., on Information and Communication Technology.
We understand that the innovative teachers program as provided by this conference will be helpful in improving more the skills and knowledge of the teachers as they go back to their respective schools or universities, which we all believe that could help improve the educational system with the use of technology.
We respect the diverse opinions of students and teachers with regard to the issue on Information and Communication Technology as we believe that this is part of the process.
We understand the need to help other countries who are not yet fully equipped with the technology by sharing existing strategies on how to incorporate technology more effectively as one of the tools for learning, or if possible facilitating technology transfers.
We believe that there are pros and cons regarding the use of technology, but we trust that teachers could be able to make a strategy on how to prevent the negative effects from further harming the students.
We suggest that conventional methods of teaching should be coupled with technology so that more learning could be facilitated.
We aks the teachers to be fully equipped with the knowledge and skills on how to use the technology in teaching so that the issue of “students teaching their real teachers” should be eradicated as we believe that in this age today most of the students, if not all, are fully aware on how to use the technology.
We expect that this conference for teachers will accomplish its goal in becoming agents of change as you empower, enact, and engage.
We hope that this conference will really bring together a community of teachers as learners, facilitate the creation of collective knowledge, create a platform for the advancement of best practices and adoption of innovation, provide training and access to technology resources, deliver integration confidence to teachers using technology in the learning process, and engage teachers intellectually and offering opportunities to be active stakeholders in their profession so that as you go back to your country we can more learn from you as our beloved mentors.
Lastly, we hope that this statement from the students in the region will be highly regarded and considered as you go along with your discussion on Information and Communication Technology as a tool to improve the educational system in the region as to hone more the potential skills of the students.
regards,
Jessie James

Thank you for your support. I would like to request everyone to add more into it. You may delete some points there if you think it's something that does not speak of the voice of students.
I also would like to request those who authored a thread to summarize, if possible, the agreements made there, and we will surely include it in the student statement.
Please note that the draft is my personal draft as of the moment.
Love to hear more of you all,
Jessie James

Dear Jessie,
I agree with shobana. It is very well written. I will refer to it again and again whenever there's a new thread posted. I think you should put a new thread saying the need summarize the discussions to other previous threads created.

Could we utilise something like Google Docs to work on this? In one of the videos Marcus linked to (about student voice...sorry I can't find the link, it was the one where the university students held up pieces of paper saying different things) it was shown that they had used Google Docs to put the script together.
You may have to create google accounts.
I think Microsoft might also have a similar program we could use.
It might be an easier and more efficient way to collaborate, and (for me at least :P) be a away of gaining new skills in online communication.
Thoughts?

If that's what everyone wants, we will do that. For now, let's utilize more on this thread so that we will not go somewhere else. Sometimes, we will use other web page or website to discuss, it may confuse people on which page or thread they should post. I thank you for your suggestion.
Great!

Jessie James

wow, im impressed. thats verywell written. could we add that there is a need for collaboration from global patnerships and community based patnerships for education and in particular the technolgy and how its used to be moved foward?
that this conference is a brilliant idea but it needs to be certain that everything will get down to local level?
I'm not sure if thats related but its something to think about and maybe incorporate.

Sara, I believe that these are your inputs. Correct me if I'm wrong.
We consider that there is a need for collaboration from global partnerships and community based partnerships for education and in particular the technology and how it is used to move forward.
We believe that this conference is a brilliant idea but it needs to be certain that everything will get down to local level.

First of all I would like to acknowledge and thank Jesse once again for his original idea of the student statement, thank you Jesse what a great idea!
In order to ensure that the written statement project gets completed, we need to make sure that we have the option for the testimonies to be collected both in writing and in visual format.
Following Jesse's idea of the statement I suggest that participants post ideas in writing to this forum, in order to compile a first draft. And for you to post YouTube links to your visual/verbal contributions in this thread. It will be useful for conference organizers to have both written and video materials as they will have the flexibility to use the different formats for different purposes (for example printed material as opposed to projecting material on screens in the foyer of the conference)." And students could find this way, more beneficial if they find speaking an easier way to get their ideas across rather than a written statement. That’s one of the problems of writing, sometimes our intentions and how we meant things to be read, don’t always sound the same to the person reading, nor make sense. But yet we still have the option of a written statement for those students who do not have access to webcams or video cameras, or may not have the required bandwidth to upload said videos to YouTube.
What do you guys think?

I also agree with Liza that we should use google docs to write the draft. That way its more a teams collaboration of efforts then one man.
Although what you have written now is very good
What do you all think?

Each and every student has their own unique story, experience, idea or opinion to share that is why it is so important that the voices of young people are heard and that we have the ability to help mould education.
-I believe that teachers need to recognise the advancements in technology and utilise these in their teaching methods in an effort to further engage students and develop computer skills.
-I think it is also important to incorporate assignments and projects that reflect real-life situations and are able to be implemented into school and the wider community.
-I think it is essential that people from outside the classroom with inspiring personal experiences regularly visit students in an effort to motivate students and encourage greater learning.
-I think peer education and mixing different age groups of students is important, as we all have different and unique experiences and even I as a 21 year olf can learn a great deal from a 16 year old.

Erin, these sound like great contributions to the Student Statement that we'll be preparing for the conference. smile
I got these statements in another thread that will be included in the draft. I heard many points in another thread, and I request everyone to incorporate it in the draft I made, especially those who are author(s) of one or more threads.

Summary from my topic "As we progress in ICT, we regress in morality" .
-Teachers and students play a role in encouraging parents/skeptics that the internet is not a negative tool and indeed if it is used wisely, can be very beneficial in the long run.
-Parents/teachers need to educate their children/students on the proper use of technology.
- If used wisely, the internet can open many doors to students and teachers alike.
