Ideas for technological change in education for Microsoft Partners In Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009.
April 30, 2009 - 07:24 AM

This is a thread in which people can voice ideas for real change in education, whether it be for schools or classrooms, which can be the platform for the presentation at the Microsoft Partners In Learning Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2009.

Given part of the conference is to "develop innovative school- or classroom-based projects" I thought that people could start coming up with some.

To start:
The Use of Online Assessments

Online assessments provide ongoing support of a student from their teacher. By providing constant feedback on how the student through publishing their assessments on a private site online the teacher gives both the student and parent a chance to reflect and see where they can improve.

Schools could have online communities in which students all have their own site where they receive their assessments which they can access any time. This also provides a chance for teacher-student communication even out of school hours giving students more oppurtunities to further their learning.

What do you think?

Please post your own ideas.

Providing Public Computers in Public Schools

Most public schools here in the Philippines especially those in rural ares are equipped with at most 2 computers. There are even schools here without any. Students are burdened to settle on the low quality of education due to the lack of technology. They do not have access to a lot of information that computers can provide. This is actually a very big problem that students suffer because of the lack of funds given to each school.

Providing public computers in public schools will allow the student to stretch their knowledge on this especially on the latest information that can be accessed through the internet. Students will also be helped in their research works and other activities since computers provide other programs that are very useful.

I know this idea is just too basic but it would really help a number of students here in the Philippines.

It seems to be that access to technology for education is limited in countries like yours. This seems like a problem that would be hard to fix given the costs involved. It would require donations or something similar.

Observation Classrooms

Observing and analysing teaching so that the teacher can improve.

I don't mean do the assessments online, I mean do the assignment as usual and receive reporting online.

The Use of Digital course management system

Any educational institution can easily use digital course management systems. For example, online system to submit assignments, grading mechanism, course forum for students, etc. There are such course management systems like Blackboard Campus Edition or Blackboard Vista for course management. If this is not possible, then at least educational institution can use Moodle for course management. Moodle is free and open source software and it should not take more than several hours to install it in your server. It is easy to use for both the parties: students and teachers. It gives lots of functionalities for students and instructors as well. I can help if any one need suggestions/help regarding installing moodle.

This is another idea thanks to anwar...

So far we have:
-Provision of computers to all classrooms
-Observation of classes/observation classrooms
-Digital course management system which includes online assessments

Does anyone have any other ideas?

These ideas are already commonplace and nothing new. Technological thingy is not necessarily all about computers and softwares in classrooms. I'm thinking about building a school-complementing facility right in the middle of dense communities of high schools and universities.

Please take a look at it here http://discuss.tigweb.org/thread/37563 and send me feedback *

Firstly, whilst the ideas above aren't new they a projects that could be used to improve education in places that currently aren't using them.

Secondly, your idea of an e-Hub is very interesting. I like the idea of having a central education area (hub) where students from school or university can gather to socialize or to share ideas and whatnot. Obviously it would need to be situated relatively close to secondary schools and universities. However, most universities cater for thousands of students, as with most schools. That would mean that the building would have to be huge. As for the changing of cirriculum, that would require quite significant change and isn't likely to occur anytime soon.

What do you think about having each school create their own hub including study areas, a cafe etc where students could do all of the things you talk about however just within a school setting?

Hey Ben, I have no doubt that access to technology in most countries in Southeast Asia is more limited than in Australia. Well, there is always a solution.
Your online assessment is a good idea, but I think it will be more useful in developed countries. You know most teachers and parents in Vietnam (and I'm sure in many other countries) don't use the Internet much, if yes, only for reading news and some simple tasks.

Of course your right. These thypes of online ideas are more directed at countries in which the use of technology has been widely established.

For developing countries, like Vietnam, the best programs are more likely to be ones which provide technology and teach about how to use technology, for example computers in every classroom. Do you have any ideas for technological change in situations like this? What about calculators, are they freely available? In particular graphics calculators?

5.) etc.

Some more ideas thanks to marcellones
