I know I have had teachers talk to us in class about some cultures the 'coloured students' are marked un-fairly. Like in south africa, white students seem to get into university with smaller effort then coloured students.

Oh, so thats what you meant duhless!

I agree, for some reason teachers seem to think its all about 'what we know' when in the real world, after we leave school what we need to know is how to apply information, not just being able to state facts and figures.

I'm glad that this kind of issue is raised here, and I am very much aware of the situation we have in the Philippines.. But even if the national government is unable to completely resolved issues regarding our educational system, I am very fortunate that our city government is doing their best to boost up our educational system in our city. Our city government allocated the highest percentage of the budget for Education, therefore students enjoy free schooling from Nursery upto Secondary, and the tertiary level is very affordable that even the poorest students in our city were able to finish their college. Students also are being pampered with free school supplies all year round, uniforms, shoes, some are getting allowances, and affordable fare on the city airconditioned busses.

Aside from that, our public schools system starts ICT education as early as pre-school. Some primary public schools are already dealing with robotics, not just as a concept but including its application, simple programming, and simple robot building.

I hope this can be done also by different local or city government in our country, because if we will just wait for the national government. It might take forever... I hope not.

Wow, that really amazing that anyone could finish high school. I wish the government in my country could provide that kind of opportunity for students here as well.

How do students get in college at your country? do they need to test to get high scores or just apply?

hey
just wanna say , agreed!
Testing to get in college at my country is also very difficult. They expect us to know, remember, and be able to apply everything in the ciricumlum whether it was taught or not and don't care about anything we can do that's not in the ciriculum.

well, instead of asking the government, i think what we can do as youth, we should scrutinize every candidate for next year's elections. If we elect the right people who values education, i think we could move easily on our campaigns.

I think money is not the main problem of education for our country but the system itself. If proper education is given in the elementary level and secondary level, students will not have a hard time finding a scholarship to get them into college.
The main problem is that there is a big student to teacher ratio, classes are fitted in straight six hours becuase of lack of classrooms. We can argue that this are all effects of budgetray constraints but my point is if the government will reduce its expenditure to unnecessary deals and focus their attention in improving the quality of education, then education is not a problem today.
We could channel our donations to other social services like environmental campaign, medical missions, livelihood projects, etc.

i totally agree with you. Department of Education should be given more funds. More classroon should be built and more teachers should be hired in public schools.

Right! testing is the way they use to measure your memory, your understanding in my country. In national examination, students have to fight each others like warriors although we don't use weapons but we use our memory, our understanding, our stamina... and even our luck. I am not really better than others but I am luckier when I get a ticket to go on. To study in the university where i am studying now, each student like me have to fight 60 others students (one of the highest rate in my country)to enter the university.

Before taking the exam, we are trained to pass the small gates of universities. Everyday, we don't only go to school to learn from teachers but also go to training centers where can provide us tips and tactic to do best in the exam. When the exam season comes, high school pupils becomes center of society. We are trained and cared by everybody because we are likely to be their pride and their happiness. It seems like a enormous burden on their fragile shoulders. For some reasons, if there is someone who can't pass the exam they might ends their life by killing themselves because they think that they disappointed their family. Unable to enter university means that your future is vague and gloomy.

I realize that in my country, learning to be better than others rather than learning to make others better.

Actually, the one that i shared applies only to my city and few cities in our country, but not the entire country itself.

Well, in the Philippines, incoming college students need to take entrance exams. High scores are needed for most sought after colleges and universities, and for scholarships also. In some colleges, you need to take the exam to know what course will best suite your abilities and intelligence. And in some colleges, you only need to pay for an enrolment fee and choose the course you want. And others, like in my city, the University requires only that you will be a resident of the city, but if not, you'll just pay a very affordable amount.

In Malaysia, education up to secondary school is free. But higher education has to be paid for. There is a special allocation for students from lower income families who cannot afford an education but have shown encouraging results in school. Other than that, there are also many government and private scholarships that also give priority to them. Though I think there is still much to be done to keep these kids in school, I believe the many initiatives taken by the government are working well.

Coutnries like Bangladesh you will find many people around you who do not afford education. I am involved with an organization where college students work part time to give free education to those young minds.

In Australia education is free (minus books and whatnot) if you go to a public school. Also, the Government provide loans for university education which you don't have to pay back until you are earning a constant salary through the taxation system.

Australia is a developed country where government is able to finance education. I was wondering what if you can't get a job after graduation?

I hope what Australia has right now for their students will also be possible here in the Philippines. Only few students, who are actually top performing students, are the luckiest ones to usually get an offer for a very good job. But they comprises only aapproximately 1-2% of the entire Philippine studentry. The rest needs to look for a job that will fit their credentials. Worst some graduates have jobs that does not match their field of studies. Just for the sake of having a job and to earn for their family.sad
