Re: How can one help in improving the educational system of one's country?

Well, one thing I know is that ministry of education just changed the testing for college. We now have 2 new tests called GAT and PAT which is similar to the american SAT. GAT is the general aptitude test and PAT is the profiency aptitude test. They wanted it to focus on our specific abilities.
I don't feel that that makes any improvements from the year before though. The problems are still not solve. Teachers and schools are still not at the level they should be in. It still doesn't change the fact that our student's ability to analyze is still low. It doesn't make the opportunity to get into college fair to people with less oppotunities. I feel it's a waste of time.

There's also money given to help support education such as textbooks and material and uniforms but as i said before, that money is little and alot is lost through corruption. if the government plans to give money i think, at the very least they must find a way to make sure it gets into the hands of the students or their family directly.

I feel that we are working only looking forward. we are trying to raise the "numbers' nubmers of students graduated, numbers of the literate, numbers on the test scores. but we look pass the very bare minimum that the education system needs such as the quality of teachers and classrooms. Interative teaching and creating thinking and analytical skills. Also, a warm environment that makes students WANT to go to school and see education precious.

Thanks, Kam, for sharing these things to us. I understand the situation there. I am hoping that YOU can make a difference there by calling more support from students, teachers, NGOs, etc., to bring this issue forward.

best regards,

Jessie James

I'm happy to hear that education is really free in some parts of the globe.

In the Philippines, we do have public schools that require only a minimal amount for you to be enrolled. But sad to say, the quality of education is not really that good. We have at least 60 students to one teacher in every class. There is a great lack of book, tables, chairs and even classrooms in most public schools. And out of 10 students who enroll in elementary, we only have around 5 who can really finish since most students drop from school to help their parents in earning money.

We really need to do a lot of things to improve the educational system in our country.

We can make donation or set up a social fund to support students who have finance trouble.

In our situation, donations are not really enough to send atleast 25% of all the youth who are out of school. We really have a big problem on our educational system.

It's not the scenario in some of the schools in the Philippines, but yes, in some schools it is.

Do have any idea if your government are working on the scenario today?

I'm glad that this kind of issue is raised here, and I am very much aware of the situation we have in the Philippines.. But even if the national government is unable to completely resolved issues regarding our educational system, I am very fortunate that our city government is doing their best to boost up our educational system in our city. Our city government allocated the highest percentage of the budget for Education, therefore students enjoy free schooling from Nursery upto Secondary, and the tertiary level is very affordable that even the poorest students in our city were able to finish their college. Students also are being pampered with free school supplies all year round, uniforms, shoes, some are getting allowances, and affordable fare on the city airconditioned busses.

Aside from that, our public schools system starts ICT education as early as pre-school. Some primary public schools are already dealing with robotics, not just as a concept but including its application, simple programming, and simple robot building.

I hope this can be done also by different local or city government in our country, because if we will just wait for the national government. It might take forever... I hope not.

Donation can't help all students but better than nothing.

for now as i see it, no matter how we enlighten our leaders about the importance of education, they have their agenda.
The best thing that every youth and everyone of us do is to do our best with our own fields (study hard) and work our way to become the future leaders of our countries so that we can initiate the change we want to be. That's all I can think of now. If we want to solve something, if we cant be the solution, we should at least be part of the solution and not the problem.wink

asking the government will not do any good. UP students have been fighting for this issue for a long time, I can still remember what they say- "Education is a right, not a privilege" But the government of our country thinks that tertiary education is not part of our constitutional right anymore.

I think money is not the main problem of education for our country but the system itself. If proper education is given in the elementary level and secondary level, students will not have a hard time finding a scholarship to get them into college.
The main problem is that there is a big student to teacher ratio, classes are fitted in straight six hours becuase of lack of classrooms. We can argue that this are all effects of budgetray constraints but my point is if the government will reduce its expenditure to unnecessary deals and focus their attention in improving the quality of education, then education is not a problem today.
We could channel our donations to other social services like environmental campaign, medical missions, livelihood projects, etc.

I still believe that asking the government will really work. I am aware that UP are doing that for many times already, and not only them but many students as well around the country. The best way to make a change is to start with that.

Jessie James

my point here is while we can use money to invest in education but we waste it for examinations which somtimes can't measure students' abilities.
