How can one help in improving the educational system of one's country?

What do you think is the best way to help those who can't afford education? How can you influence the educational system in your country?

We can make donation or set up a social fund to support students who have finance trouble.

Ask the government to work hard to ensure the improvement of education.
I am looking forward to hear more from other youth.

When reading about other countries stances on free education I feel quite lucky to live in a country where education is free.
Here in New Zealand education is seen as a right, not a privilege and the government spends $5000 per child (between the ages of 5-18) a year to make sure that they can get a proper, well rounded education.
However if a student, after finishing high school chooses to begin tertiary education it is up to them to pay for themselves, unless they apply for one of the many funds and scholarships that are available for those who academically and culturally succeed. These funds go towards paying the students fees in their tertiary courses.
It is because of this right to education that so many students take it for granted, they have never experienced a life where education was not a right or even cheap and that in order for you to receive an education you have to fight for it.
Seeing as I have only ever known edcuation as a personal right I am interested to hear from those who come from countries where education is not free and has to be paid for.
Meaghan wrote of how she had conversed with Korean exchange students at her school and they told her that they felt a typical New Zealand school day was almost relaxing as they no longer felt the pressure of having to fight for university entrance. In their country for those who do not achieve entrance to university it is not because they haven’t tried, it is because the universities have no room for them.
In the Shift Happens video there was a fact that countries like India and China have proportionally more ‘bright’ students then we have students.
I ask you, does this mean that they have intelligent people whos abilities are being wasted in poverty or in a mindless job when if they only just had the chance they could really help change the world?

In the Philippines as well education is right; however, in reality, there is really an issue on its application: how could it be a right if there are still expenses to be paid?
I am happy to hear that in your country education is free and that the government ensures that it is done in reality.

We do have expenses, books uniforms and optional school fees but there is nothing like "In oder to attend school you must pay $1000.00".
If your financial sistuation means that you cant cover the cost of a uniform/books the governement will also help out.
We are lucky like that
What school expenseses do students have in the Philippines have?

In my country, education is not quite free but government also finance for those who get the good results in learning especially those who live in poverty.
Every one has right to education but to enter college we have to pass a tough examination in which we have to fight each others to get a ticket to university. I know there are many smart people but for some reasons they can't pass the exams so they miss the chance to be educated.
Another disadvantage of our education system is they spend too much money and effort on the examinations while they can use that money to invest in education so that everybody is able to go to college.

That's great, Marcus. It's good to know that.
Miscellaneous, books, other school fees, etc. I am fortunate because I can afford those, and I'm studying in a private school, but how about those who can't.

Thanks Jesse ,
What kind of school are you studying at is it Tertiary, because I notice you are 22. If so what degree are you studying?
duleess,I love your posts, I find your country really interesting
So your culture has the same problems in your education systemt that I highlighted in my above post?
Like to get to university you have to pass tough standards as there are alot of people wanting to study there?
I know I have had teachers talk to us in class about some cultures the 'coloured students' are marked un-fairly. Like in south africa, white students seem to get into university with smaller effort then coloured students.

What do you mean, like how elaborate are your examinations?

I'm still in highschool, next year I plan to go to Broadcasting school and complete a Bachelor of broadcasting communications.
However being apart of S.P.L.I.C.E has made me think maybe I should instead do a teaching degree and continue to work on research projects in the path of education.
I really do find this enjoyable
Have you watched our video? 'You have a message'? If so you would see how fun these projects are.

Though if you think about it Marcus, if we want to attend private schools, there is a high cost added to it. I know one girl who went to a private school thanks to a scholarship, but that only lasts for half a year and so after that, she's coming back to our school since her family can't afford it.
I think scholarships and funding is a great way for people that aren't able to cover the costs to still have education.
Countries like France have 'Universal Education'. It's like universal healthcare, but for education. The tax payers pay their taxes and the French people get education without much cost. I don't know if they have tough examination type processes but it seems to be working out for them. However, I doubt that something like that will come to our country since we don't even have universal health care yet.

Heya,
In Thailand there's a huge gap in the income. Of course the government has financial aids but as we all probably know, that's never enough and it never seems to quite work out. The best schools always finds a way to ask for money. the schools that are actually "free" don't ahve the same quality as the schools that aren't. from the point of well of the people who are struggling with poverty, what's the point of going to school if in the end you can't get a high enough school on the entrance exam to make it to a GOOD college? on top of that, the difference in quality of the school in the capital and outside the capital is is so large that compeition into college can hardly be called fair.
first off, i think the quality of the teachers must be raised. People, even teachers view teaching as a bad job because it pays little. Therefore, the poeple who go into teacher are mostly people who have low scores on the entrance exams.
to cut back the time it would take to improve the quality of teachers, i think technogy could reach out to give students the same opportunity everywhere.
One thing that is going on in thailand right now is the outside of school tutoring. Most students say it's better than learning in school. those tutoring schools send the video recording to different parts of the country to their tutoring centers and students there can have the same opportunities.
the big problem with this is the price. If the government can have funds for video recordings to make up for the bad teaching, a few caring and able teachers, and maybe a computer lab instead of school uniforms, more teachers, and money to lower school tuition, it would be a more effective way to improve education in my country. It could work directly with where the problem is and avoid corruption stealing away that money a little bit.

Thanks for sharing that, Kam.
Do have any idea if your government are working on the scenario today?
Looking forward to your feedback.

Jessie James
