Err, I doubt it. Reading books is an entirely different concept. You don't read books just to know the contents, or finish off a story. Reading books as a hobby involves a lot more than that.
I am very much sure that no technology can really replace books.

I agree that there are many advantages attached with use of technology for this matter : Accessibilty, convenience in carrying, storage etc.
Yet, most people do it because they really want to store it(or in better words "own a collection" . If you were to look at it from a book lover's point of view, it's really the feeling you get when you hold a book in your hand.
Though, I can see your point very well, because nothing can be said for the coming generations, who get introduced to latest gadgets right from childhood. For such a group of people, I highly doubt my arguments.

I read books and do on-line reading/research everyday. Both are good as learning is concern. And all of us have different perpectives towards the two entity, but one thing I can share, it depends on the person reading and the purpose of reading.

I think it does affect the reading habits of a person. For instance, students usually rely more on the internet in their research works since it give them less time to do it rather than going to the library and reading about the topic.

I think this thread is quite interesting whenn you refer back to one of Meaghans posts.

Although there has been some recent criticism of the company, this demonstrates that Microsoft certainly does not lack innovation nor vision.
Now just imagine if we could permeate that technology into schools. We could not only improve education, but revolutionize it!

Did you see the man reading the newspaper? Maybe future books could be something like that?...

Technology will not cause us to stop reading books. There are 2 types of books today: one is hard copy book and the other one is ebook. I often read ebooks, and I believe that my reading habit is more enhance by technology.
Who are reading ebooks here?

Jessie James

Personally Jesse I find that reading e books isn't the same experience as having a real book in my hands.
I have tried to read an e book before but generally it leads to me becoming quite tired and I end up not concentrating on the subject matter, i'm reading it but it doesn't actually increase my understanding.
Did you watch that video that was mentioned in Meaghans post Jesse? What were your thoughts about future books being made using that technology?

Great sharing, Marcus. Thanks for your personal experience on ebooks. However, on my part, I can read well using ebooks. If there are things I didn't understand and if there are words that need further details, right then and there I could research those things using the internet. That makes my reading skills more enhance.
Yes, I did. It was great, and I am looking forward to have that in the near future. It is amazing. Great! Marvelous. How about you?

I agree that would be one of the main benefits of e books. Having the ability to just research somethign more if you dont understand it using the internet. *
Though apart from the fact they would be cheaper, and perhaps more conveniant they just dont work for me.
I loved those ideas! Especially that interactive classroom and being able to draw diagrams of the water cycle with your finger tips, and having it come alive before your very eyes. I hope one day that technology like that in the video will become a reality *
What was your favourite piece of technology in the video?

Great! Well, it's your personal experience and stand matters. I understand that for this time, it won't work for you, but later on, as you go along, I believe you will. Just give it a try. And if you feel that it is working already, let me know. :
Wow, thanks for sharing that you love the interactive classroom, etc. That's really awesome.
On my part, I love reading news, and I love the idea of reading news in just few clicks where it will forward you to another news. Well, I love all the settings there. It's just amazing.
I am looking forward to see those things in the year 2019 and beyond.
For the rest, what do you think? I am looking forward to hear from yours as well.
Thanks, Marcus.
regards,
Jessie James

I agree with Marcus in the difficulty of e-books. Sitting at a computer for more than an hour can affect my concentration and make my eyes sore. To read a whole book by looking at a screen can not only be uncomfortable for us but also bad for your health. Children are taught not to sit too close to the television and spend too much time watching it, so wouldn't it be the same for computer screens?
And Jessie, what you said with being able to research on the internet things such as "words that need further detail", what were dictionaries made for?? Anytime I'm reading a book and find a word that I haven't come across before, to help me understand what I'm reading, I look up that word in the dictionary... I don't even need an internet connection.
Personally, technology has been a part of my loss of reading books. Because I am doing so many things to do with technology (like going on the internet to participate in social networks, forum like these etc.), I don't have much time to read a book and can only do it at the end of the day before I go to sleep. I try my best, but it seems that there is always something else that I should be doing.

Thanks, Zay. Great comments.
It's a matter of our stand. I actually don't have any problem if you are having difficulties in reading ebooks. It's up to you if you prefer reading books. I love reading books as well, but most of the time, I read using my computer to save money and research easily.
I respect your stand regarding the same. We all have our own different strategies in learning.
What I am just saying here is that reading ebooks or using the technology doesn't cause the loss of reading book habits. I myself read hard copies books as well, but when I need information right away, I buy ebooks online and read it.
Again, I thank you for your answer. I appreciate it.
I am looking forward to hear more of you soon.
regards,
Jessie James

yeah, e books really don't work. I do read em every now and then but only if i'm desperate to read that certain novel.
I don't think technology causes the loss of reading habits. Personally, the reason i read less is because there are not enough resources. There are few public libraries in thailand, less that are free and even less with good books.
As much as i get addicted to an internet, i defiantely prefer cuddling up with a good book.

I love students interaction here. As I said, it depends to the person if you prefer ebooks or hard copy. In my case, I use the two, but oftentimes, I use ebooks.
I wish to hear more of your feedbacks soon.

Jessie James
