[Poll] Digital course management system
April 26, 2009 - 02:44 AM
|
|
Any educational institution can easily use digital course management systems. For example, online system to submit assignments, grading mechanism, course forum for students, etc. There are such course management systems like Blackboard Campus Edition or Blackboard Vista for course management. If this is not possible, then at least educational institution can use Moodle (http://moodle.org/) for course management. Moodle is free and open source software and it should not take more than several hours to install it in your server. It is easy to use for both the parties: students and teachers. It gives lots of functionalities for students and instructors as well. I can help if any one need suggestions/help regarding installing moodle.
DO you want to use any Digital course management system in your educational institution?
Yes
(7 votes for 77.78%)
No
(2 votes for 22.22%)

Yes of course. I will always VOTE for YES if a new system or technology will be used for the improvement of the QUALITY of education.

I do agree with your idea on digital course management system. Organizing is part of ensuring learning process goes on well.
However, I do think there are limitations in the usage of course management system. Is it possible for us to rely solely on this system? That's when the negative part of technology comes in.
Anyway, with the right system I am sure this will work.

At my school in Australia, our IT gurus have created a "Virtual Learning Environment" where you can get anything and everything including handouts, links to related websites, access to the library catalogue, online reporting from teachers and course outlines for the rest of the subject. Whilst it is only in its infantsy I found that using it was very rewarding and helpful.

Nice to hear your experience Ben? Can you please give us more information about the Digital course management software you are using?

I'm not exactly sure but it is part of our school intranet and can be accessed both at school and at home by both parents and students

In New Zealand and at my school, we have a similar thing. Our school website lets us login as ourselves and look at the event calendar, lead us to the school wiki site, create blogs and we can email anybody using our school email addresses including teachers.
There are also national education websites such as the NZQA website which has everything students/teachers/parents need to know about exams. It has previous exam papers with the judgement statement (answers) and some statistics on the pass rate etc.
There is another site which gives information about the assessments/achievement standards (i.e. the achievement criteria, subject content, assessment type), key tips and advice from previous years, practice for more revision and links for more information. When you sign up with this website, you can post questions and have discussions with other students and subjects teachers.
I used both these sites and helped me immensely and grew my confidence for the exams.

Another key point to mention is that at any time of the day we are able to log onto our school emails etc, not just during school time. This is fundamental in providing us with round the clock interaction with our teachers. Learning doesn't always happen between 8.45-3.15 this way if we are at home studying, we can still contact our teachers to query them on something we have come across that we don’t understand. As Zay says "I used both these sites and helped me immensely and grew my confidence for the exams."

Great to hear about NZ Digital Course Management System. Is there any website where we can see the system?
