[Poll] Why students get bored easily during class?
April 26, 2009 - 01:00 AM

I am very sure that some students may fall sleep during class, but why? Isn't because of too much homework? or maybe because of inadequate sleep last night at hostel (boarding school)

What is your opinion?

Ha, in our school I generally don't see many students who have fallen asleep in class, more students who become off task and start to doodle, whisper, draw and generally just not concentrate on the task at hand. I have only ever witnessed one student fall asleep and that was during a video and was because he hadn't got much sleep the night before!

I have fallen asleep at a lecture once, my drama teacher was hyping up this professor to be the funniest lecturer ever. We traveled to tauranga after school one day and everyone was excited to hear him, we walk in...sit down and OMG it was sooooooo boring. He didn't make any jokes and I hadn't had much sleep the night before and I ended up driffting off part way through LOL. I woke up to the clapping at the end and joined in everyone was looking at me and laughing. It was quite funny *

But to give me soem credit it was a lecture about Shakespare :P

(I bet Liza will come in here now and try and defend him) smile

sometimes, i fall asleep in class because the subject is so tedious. Some teachers only teach what is printed in text books. There is nothing new or interesting.

Another reason is lack of motivation. In my class, students don't have much motivation to study. The only thing they care for is grade. I definitely disappoint about what they are doing because they don't study for passion but certificate.

duhless, I know what you mean when you said that the only thing students care about are there grades. The first question a teacher gets asked from the students when they say were going to do such and such is... Is it worth Credits? and then if the teacher says yes...How many? If the answer is no its not worth credits students decide they aren't going to participate. I hate this! And if you read my essay you can see why! I value my education, we are so lucky to get one and tasks like these prepare us for exams/assignments and yet the students dont participate because it isnt worth anything and then wonder why they fail there exams because they havent put in the hard yards beforehand!

ARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH Its so frustrating. And you cant tell anyone, they just wont listen!.... It's an ever lasting circle of contempt!]

Thank you, Marcus! I was wondering have you have been in VietNam. In my country, we also take education for granted. Every body is encouraged to go to school. Yet, the matter is Vietnamese care too much on certificate and degree and forget about one's abilities.

If you get a high degree in VietNam, I am sure that you will get a good job easily. You will be highly praised and respected although your degree doesn't show your real performance.

No duhless, I cant say I have, but I want to one day...
It has a lot of history, sad history especially the war and one day I want to go and visit and see for myself.........

This is slightly going off topic here but can you maybe tell us more about the education system in your country? Like what your schools consist of, the technology you have access to and the quality of your teachers? What I’m love most from this forum is getting to know so many different people around the world and their education systems, one day I would really like to meet you all. Especially seeing as you all seem to have such a thirst for learning and that is really cool and something that I believe in smile

Until quite recently I was quite close minded in the way of education around the world. I can admit I too took my education for granted. But learning about Malawi has changed me.... S.P.L.I.C.E and the student voice project have changed me...

Teachers can present the subject matter in an interactive way using technology to solve this problem.

In my country, sleeping during class hours is somehow common especially in government-run schools.

1. Usually the reason is that the teacher himself is boring. Like, the teacher is somewhat conventional in the methods she uses.

2. The number of students per class. Usually in large classes of around 5o or more studenets, the teacher has difficulties when it comes to handling all of her students.

3. The subject/topic is difficult and is not being discussed thoroughly, or too wordy.

4. The method of teaching is so traditional like plain lectures and presentations.

5. The class schedule itself, like if the subject falls after lunch time or what we call holy hours. Usually around 12noon until 4pm. And if the subject has to be taken up for around 3-4 hours.

6. External factors, like if the student did not have enough sleep, or too tired from extra-curricular activities.

7. Also, the weather. If its raining so hard, it's cold. It is common in our country that if its cold, its nice to sleep...

Those are few of the reasons why students tend to sleep during class hours.

If the teacher knows how to approach well his or her student by using technology as a tool for learning, I believe that students will not be bored in class.

Jessie James

^I agree to that as well, what's the use of technology if a teacher doesn't know how to integrate it to class discussion effectively. That will still be useless.

I think that students get bored has a lot of factors. One is teachers are boring. Some teachers come into class and just teach only the contents which sometimes is very boring. Although there are breaks during the day but students ought to have some small breaks like the teacher say some jokes for reduce their stress.

Another is students may be tired during the day or have less sleep the past night. When they are tired, sleeping will be one of the ways to revitalize for them. Also, having lots of homework can be one of the reasons too. This will make the students to work harder and have less rest.

hahaha it's an amusing topic. I gusse we all have our own reasons for sleeping but one thing that makes me curious is that i've just recently changed school

at my old school i hardly ever see my friends falling to sleep (not that they pay attention all the time, they doodle and talk but they don't sleep)
but at my new school, very often over half of the class is asleep

I think one of the resons is the teacher lets us sleep at my new school. I gusse they're just too bored with wakign everyone up or shutting us up, one or the other. but at my old school, no body else sleeps so you don't either and if you do then you stick out like a sore thumb and the teacher would surely see you.

A good question which can lead to many reasons to why students don't care that much about thier education. I believe The big focus needs to be what motivates students to learn in a classroom. Once you have the answer to this then you can understand the reason education can be so poorly looked at. I often find that when the work in class is somewhat 'difficult' or the student simply does not understand the work then they switch off. But then when they get something right and understand the work doesn't seem so bad. The hard thing about this is that there are between 25-30 students with 25-30 different abilities in ONE class with ONE teacher. Sometimes it just takes the student to say they dont understand or be offered a helping hand to get motivated into learning.
So from this I guess some responsibility can come to fellow students in helping others that are in need of it, although it can be difficult enough for ourselves let alone other people.
This is where technology can make a difference as having access to information and being able to ask questions and locating answers without feeling 'shamed out' in the classroom can work better for some people. But this is definatly an issue that needs to be addressed and I think we can raise some solutions together.
I did raise the idea of having a study group where students who at least had the minimal understanding of a topic could help students who had no idea. Plus with exams approaching I thought it would be a good idea as the hype of exams can prompt some 'drive' to try to pass, also it would improve the student's knowledge of the topic by teaching it to others, what do you think?
Chaz.

Motivating students and using technology will not make them bored. This is in addition to the ideas raised here.

Keep going guys.

Jessie James
