Teachers and Technology
April 25, 2009 - 07:26 AM

I have noticed in a few of the threads how some posts have mentioned teachers and the amount of technology they use in the classroom.

I think it would be quite interesting for us to share how views on what we think teachers should be trained on, especially these days particulary in the area of ICT.

Do you think that teachers should be required to take technology courses as part of their teacher training?

In your own country, what training does a teacher get in ICT currently? Do you feel that they are being properly equipped for 21st Century teaching?

I absolutely agree that teachers should take some training courses on technology.

In my country where technology is a new concept. Many teachers find it hard to apply technology in their teaching. For example, they don't even know how to use the projector to show their slides. Students have to help them turn the projector on. It is more funny when i heard that some teachers don't even know how to use computer.

It is very necessary to equip for teachers the knowledge of technology today before they stand in front of hundreds of smart students to teach them about what is called science.

Isn't it funny duhless when the students end up teaching the teachers? Thats what this forum is about isn't it? In one way- we are here to help current and future teachers understand what we need in 21st century educationsmile and that does involve teaching the teachers! :P

Last year our school went througha technology transformation and all the classes were upgraded with projectors. Even now some teachers dont bother using them, choosing instead to write everything on the white board, notes drawings...EVERYTHING! How much time could be saved if they used word processing for their notes and the internt for drawings and videos?

I'm sure some teachers are alien to our needs these days :P

My school was recently fully equipped with projectors as well Marcus! Being able to present the entire class with a PowerPoint or Youtube video is a progressive method of teaching, and it's amazing to see how the modern classroom has evolved from, say, 10 years ago.

Computer literacy, I believe, should not be so much mastered by teachers but encouraged by them. I witness a lot of teachers being liberated by this new degree of technology, and they tend to work from their laptops and be less proactive in class.

It's really funny when students are teaching their teachers regarding how to use the technology that we all have today. It is now time to move on the next level. Teachers must be opened to changes. They must learn the technology; otherwise, students will become the teachers of the real teachers.

Yes, it is true that some teachers are aliens to the technology. They should use them and study hard as well on how to use them.

I definitely agree that teachers should get the chance to study up and become computer literate (at the least, then on to smart boards, cool video cameras, online forum possibilities...smile), but I think it is important to note that teachers need to be given this opportunity through designated professional development days, otherwise we may be expecting too much and getting little in return.

“students will become the teachers of the real teachers” is an interesting thought…I don’t know if that is such a bad thing, teachers certainly need enough support from the school, but teachers being assisted by students, in an organised set up (not just when that darn projector won’t go) would be a good way of building teacher-student relationships, would give students obvious purpose and practice and provide extra professional development without a big price tag

If you take a look at the teacher response (second video on page) to our “You Have a Message Video” and go to about 4min 50sec, Eric Frangeheim (who was the hired speaker for a teacher only day) suggests just this after viewing our piece. Can we assist our teachers? Synthesis is high up there on Bloom’s Taxonomy so perhaps helping to make resources/activities, using technology, and then showing our teachers how to make the best use of them could be a great way of using and furthering our abilities.

Great thoughts. Very interesting. Collaboration and interaction are needed in order to establish a harmonious classroom setting, when using the technology.

Jessie James

Nice one Liza, that was really insightful *
I have never seen Blooms Taxonomy before but it is so correct!

The beauty of it is that when students can work with teachers and vice versa. Both teachers and students are helping each other reach higher understandings. I suppose, with enough help we could eventually reach (for the economists in herewink) an educational version of Economies of Scale. Where the teacher’s knowledge and understanding of the technology is growing with the students help (these are the inputs). Because of this teachers can teach faster, as they can use word processing instead of writing on the board, youtube videos to explain things in a fresh new way that students can relate to. Now this new way of teaching leads to a large increase in students who are achieving better results (these are our outputs). If the increase in the outputs is proportionately more than the increase in the inputs then the average cost of production (the time it takes for teachers to help students reach learning success) will decrease. This is because everything is happening much faster, students have enough time to learn everything and go over it till they know it well because they are learning so much faster. You could say that when a class/school reaches this they have reached Educations of Scalebig grin

Our teacher regularly have training in improving the quality of education they deliver to the students. These include training in advancing their knowledge in technology.

Not all school have these trainings since some public school are not really equipped with modern technology.

In my school, teachers are constantly undergoing different trainings not only with regard to the use of such technology but also on how they can effectively integrate it to their classes. Our teachers receive scholarship grants or support from the local government to study either certificate or diploma courses for ICT, considering that the students are far advanced when it comes to ICT. Therefore teachers should fulfill the expectations set by different academic competitors and also the students' intellectual capacity.

In addition, teachers knowledge and skills in handling such ICTs are being enhanced from time to time.. They also receive continuous training to update themselves and to increase their level of effectiveness in dealing with ICTs.

Currently there are lots of training for teachers in my school. Teachers are starting to use technology as their assistance now. For example, in astronomy my teacher uses a program to show the star map and explain it. This makes me easier to understand. However, teachers who, aged above 50, aren't used to using computer so they prefer not to use technology in their classes.

i dont think it's funny when a student teaches his/her teacher. As I observed from the other posts, most agree that teachers should be familiar with the latest technology.
When a student teaches the teacher, it only shows a very good teacher-student relationship where the teacher learns from his/her student.
In my opinion, forcing teachers (im talking to the old ones) to take additional course just to fit in is not a good idea. They will most probably say that they are already on the terminal of their lives, so what is the use of learning these stuffs. Besides why we will teach you what you already know?
And for the next generation of teachers, i think they are already aware of the latest technology. The time will come when all the teachers are also techy peoplewink
