Your average day at school....

I am really curious about what an average school day is/was like for you. How long is it? How much homework do you receive? How many classes do you have a day? I have only experienced secondary school in New Zealand so I haven't clue what it would be like in Thailand or Singapore etc.
I think this would be useful to me as a way of seeing alternet education systems, and I hope it would help/interest the rest of you

I agree with Liza, it would be really interesting to find out, especially after yesterday when I read a post from Kam that mentioned even students who studied english didn't really use the internet as there were hardly any Thai websites out their and since their english was poor they didn't use it. what do they use instead? I know when ever teachers in New Zealand havea research asignment for there class they often book a computer suite for us to use. We would use both the internet and word processing etc.
What do you use?

There are Korean international students at my school who describe their average day as starting school at 7am, ending late in the evening, staying up until 2am at the library and tutorials, just to wake up in a few hours to do the same.
They say that that's why international students will pay up to $15,000 to come to New Zealand and escape from the pressure.

well, now it is a lot different when i was in secondary school. Our average day means going to class, listen to lectures, do some class execise, attend PE/Music?military drill classes and eventually go home or hang out with friends in our own "tambayan" (lounge area). Now, with the advance of technology and the blooming computer games industry, i observed a lot of internet/cafes and gaming centers just around any school, especially public schools. I think this is very alarming because most students opt to cut classes just to play online games or use the internet's social networks or download or stream videos, etc. These students are using these technologies in a very wrong way.
Now I also seldom see children playing in the streets or backyards. Most of them are inside the computer shops.

My average day at school way back in secondary level, 11 hour-stay in school, taking up around 12-14 subjects. Well, it was not a fun schedule for teens who prefer to socialize or what we call "party people". Students from my school are being molded to be the best in every endeavor. But we're not geeks! and of course, we never get bored. many times we often stay longer in our school than in our homes.
The Secret?! Conduct class in a conventional or "Ordinary way" with integration of technologies and other unusual learning methods such as role playing, film making, small group meetings, peer discussion, movie presentations, even games! We use technology for all subjects and that's the reason why we are having fun learning.***

My day at school starts at 12:30 and ends at 5:30 pm. During the day, I study some law and economics subjects. Sometimes, i have to prepare for my presentation so it takes more time to study. I have to wake up early in the morning to trawl for information and rehearse my talk.
On Friday, I have English class which i feel comfortable. In this class, everyone are free to speak loudly their ideas. Moreover, we make our atmosphere more funny by playing games and telling jokes.

Wow, I can't imagine spending as much time in school as some of you!
My school day starts at 8:45 (get up at about 6 to get ready, spend time with my family, eat and catch the bus). We have 15min in a "Form Class" where the day's notices are read, any unexplained absences are checked out by our teacher and we then usually sit around chatting. We attend school Monday to Friday. After Form Class, we have two classes, an hour long each, then a 1/2 hour break, then 2 more classes (an hour each) then a 45min break, then one last hour long class and it is time to go home.
At my year level (Yr 12) I have 6 classes, at a different time each day. I do Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Calculus (at Yr 13 level) and Drama.
I do a lot of study and preparation at home but actual assigned homework rarely takes more than an hour a night all total.
How are you assessed?

Ditto with Liz! New Zealand allows a lot of freedom for secondary school students and our NCEA examinations and university entrance is designed to be as inclusive as possible.
Does anyone else here do Cambridge? Do any of your schools place heavy emphasis on ICT classes and technical skills, or require it as a prerequisite?

However the mutal friend we have came top in the world for Economics, so those exams are well worth it!

Isn't it better to be excited by the idea of an exam then to be dreading it? Imagine what school would be like if everyone looked forward to the way they were assessed!

8 hours a day in school, with 2 to 3 assignments would be enough. If you spent these details everyday, excluding Saturdays and Sundays for some, but including for some as well, as the case may be, I believe that you will be more educated than you ever expected.
regards,
Jessie James

I love the sound of an IB syllabus... Imagine going to a psychology, philosophy, or politics class every day after lunch!

I am an international student studying in Singapore, so in a way, I have seen two systems of education. An average day in Singapore is hectic, yet highly resourceful, and at the end of every single day you can surely say that "Wow, I learned this today". In Singapore, not much emphasis is laid on academics, and people are encouraged to indulge in Self Directed Learning(SDL). In fact, education here takes a more holistic approach, where more focus is given to co-curricular activities(CCA). Therefore, the day is hectic not because we have tons of tutorials to do, but because we have to allocate so many hours to our CCA.

Thanks for sharing that. You can learn a lot in co-curricular activities as well.
