Can rapists be rehabilitated?

When it comes to treatment for sexual offenders, common response is that of punishment... few people consider rehabilitation as an option.
What are your thoughts?

Off the cuff, I think anyone who commits rape demonstrates a serious, deep-seated desire to damage another's humanity. I don't know that we are skilled enough to "fix" this problem. Forgive in spirit; punish by law.

I could not agree more that rape stems from a deep-seated drive to damage... however, sometimes it is a little bit more warped than that: Paedofiles, who are men, for example, victimize young boys which remind them of themselves. The paedofile who was raped himself attempts to "love" or "fix" himself by sexually abuse another little boy he perceives to be himself. Psychologist refer to this as a "self-medicating."
What do you think of this?
What do you mean by "forgive in spirit"? How can someone show this?

By "forgive in spirit" I think I meant forgive in theory, because, I cannot surmise how one could forgive such an act unless he or she were visited ansd swayed by the Holy Spirit himself.
I see the direction you're suggesting, but it seems like the person you described is too deeply damaged for rehabilitation...abusing one's image of oneself to reconnect? Sounds self-destructive. Do you know of any individuals who have achieved what one might call rehabilitation?
