I was at a jane Goodall lecture over the weekend and some reasons why animal testing were detailed.

I think the best reason is that cross species testing doesnt give an accurate representation of what the effects of a product will be on humans. That and the practice puts humans on a different level than animals, which I am opposed to.

that said, some animal testing does help to develop important new medical procedures - insulin was discovered through testing on animals - a dog I believe. However most testing is non-essential testing for cosmetics, which is not justified in my opinion.

well i see both sides the pro side if it is a necessity like when we tested on pigs and found out that staples could be used in surgery instead of sutures on the intesants (yes that is most likely spelled wrong)big grin

hey animals are important they give you meat ,test your products, give you clothes and blankets, furtlize your plants, give you their homes. without animals the whole eco system would fall like insects would be a pian and would swarm your home think about it

Why do we not test humans?
What makes testing animals different to testing humans?
(Point = we shouldn't test animals for the same reasons we shouldn't test humans)

The way I see it, testing on animals for things like disease cures etc is ok, and often useful. Can you honestly say that if you were dying you wouldn't accept treatment for a disease because the cure was tested on animals?
However, I, too, feel that animals are living breathing creatures and shouldn't be harmed. therefore I think if the animal will be hurt from the process it should not be done. at least until they are absolutely certain it will work.
But testing on animals for things like cosmetics is just horrible and should NOT be done.

I agree with Sase.

The animals testing should be undergone in the necessary situation only not only for the cosmetic use.

Animal testing is good and bad both.....good from the perspective that it saves thousands of lives of humans...bad frome the perspective that...they are also the creature of the nature as humans.....

Before clinical trials are done in the humans animal testing preceeds the CT....so animal testing is necessary to protect any negative effects in the humans....

Animals are also a part of the nature, they have the right to survive....and enjoy their life...

In conclusion, animal testing should be in accordance to the rationality.

Good point. It's easy to say "no" to animal testing for cosmetic purposes, but it's hard to not appreciate medical developments that save lives that were tested on animals. To be honest, I'm torn. I really wonder what the alternatives are, if there are any? Or if they're overlooked because it's more costly or complicated or not as effective.
