[Poll] Learning via the internet or in the ordinary way, which is better in your opinion?

What do you choose to study whether studying online or in the ordinary way is better for you? What are the benefits from the one you choose? What do you like more on that one?
From my point of view, each has their own benefits. Learning online has a advantage in I can learn anywhere. From my experience, currently, I'm studying in a program of Stanford University. Which I can attend it online and send the professor reports what course I took during that week. On the other hand, learning in the ordinary way makes the student to have more real-time interaction which will make the course more fun. These are my point of views for this topic. How about yours?
Learning ordinary way or online away from class?
Ordinary Way

I have voted ordinary way. The Reason is when you learn on the ordinary way, you're able to ask the questions that you confuse or not certain and you will have more responsibility for someone who not sure in their intention of themselves.
On the other hand, for me if I want to change my opinion, I think that website or that online lessons should have the rules like to fix the deadline of studying or fix the deadline of sending the homework.
In additional, sometime if you make that online learning lessons or that online academic examinations to be more important to their future/career opportunities, students probably concentrate on the internet learning via like the TOEFL IBT test.
Or to integrate the learning on the internet with the learning in the ordinary way is the best way for me because students will learn their major lesson and other lessons synchronizingly.

I feel this poll should be edited slightly. I feel although it would be wonderful to have worldwide online classes, to solely have these and nothing else would leave the students feeling rather empty. Last year I had optional online classes in English, and I found it to be a rewarding experience. Though I wouldn’t want to stop having the original classroom setting as I would miss the interaction and you wouldn’t be able to get proper 1 on 1 working time with the teacher. Although you could maybe send them a private mail asking them to explain something it just wouldn’t be the same as spending 5-10 minutes with them helping you understand an important idea. And I guess there is more of a sense of achievement when you understand something in a real life setting rather than when you’re sitting on a computer reading over the private message your teacher has sent you. And I’m not sure about the rest of you but sometimes in a situation like that if I do not already understand something that can just make it worse, like I will just tune out.
So at the moment, I voted the ordinary way, But I would prefer a mixture of the both

I went with the ordinary way because I find interacting with people really helpful to my learning. I am a discussion oriented person, and if I could be in a class with 10 interested people, it wouldn’t matter their age or opinion as long as they wanted to be there learning and could cope. If the same 10 people were in an online discussion I don’t believe you would get the same results.
Online learning does have the advantage of being available anywhere you can get the internet, and it would be great to have a chance to be in a “class” with people from around the world, but I wouldn’t sacrifice face-to-face time for it.

I have to agree that the 'Ordinary way' is better than via the internet.
I personally am the kind of person that can learn from what other people are doing, by what they said etc.
Some may argue that you can still do that using the internet, but to me it's better if we're all physically present.
When we use the internet, we have more time to think about how we're going to respond. This can be good in someways, but on the other hand, it means we hesitate to ask some questions or say something that might have been beneficial to the class. How many times in your class have someone asked a question that ended up being (a some what off topic) discussion and you learnt something new? That's happened in nearly all of my classes before.
It's also more difficult to grasp the emotions of others. We can use webcam, but we can never really tell how excited or confused or unhappy others might be unless we are in their presence.
There are many advantages to learning via the internet, but to me the 'ordinary way' win.

I know we have different sentiments when it comes to learning either "ordinary way" or "on-line".
I voted for "Ordinary way". In ordinary way, we can learn from others' perception and answers. We can easily get constructive criticisms. In ordinary way, it does not mean that we have a very limited resources of knowledge and materials. It will also facilitate lively discussions and an open channel of communication.
On the other hand, "On-line" learning is also a good way for education because it may provide you wide resources or references. The knowledge that one can get is always the latest.
But "on-line" learning is not that accessible and affordable enough to other communities unlike the "ordinary way" of learning.

Learning is a two-way process. It needs interaction. Learning by the "ordinary way" promotes a lot of interaction between the student and the teacher. One will easily comprehend what the teacher is trying to communicate to the student becuase of "real time interaction. One can easily clarify or verify certain points with his/her teacher.
On the other hand, learning online will give you additional and latest information. The downside of this is sometimes you cannot trust the sources of these information and our brain has a limited capacity for storing information. We should only learn what we need

I vote for " ordinary way" because of some reasons.
Firstly, learning in ordinary way help students improve their social skills through their conversations on class. Although learning via internet enable us to get information and feedback faster, it can't help us develop our soft skills such as team work skills or presenting skills, etc...
Secondly, learning in ordinary way is a good way to keep and develop our relationships which has been damaged a lot since the advent of high technologies. I was wondering how the world would be if we just sit all day at a corner to contact with each others but never get the human contact feelings.

I choose both. It should be interconnected. To get a better result, using the the ordinary and internet is a great help in facilitating educational progress.

Not all information in the internet is correct. They sometimes lead to confusion. So I think learning the ordinary way is still the best.

Yes, it is true that not all information from the internet is correct. As a student, we have to know how to distinguish between good sources of information from the internet. Using them is still good because without it we cannot have to access to information right away. Say for example, if you want to know any information from a certain country or event quickly, the very means to do it is to use the internet. To find the correct information is by finding a good source. I know that we all know how to find good sources. If some of us don't know yet, it can be learned in due time by studying how to effectively do some good research.
Not all information in the internet is correct.
I am looking forward to hearing more feedback soon.
regards,
Jessie James

I think both ways of learning have their merits and demertis, and we cannot define in absolute terms which is "BETTER".
Learning via the ordinary way, assuming that you are referring to the use of textbooks in conventional classrooms, is indeed helpful:
1. Firstly, this way the nature of discussions is controlled, and it can be ensured that students are learning what they should be,
2. Secondly, students get to indulge in discussions, and help each other in the process of learning,
3. And thirdly, this way, students get to develop on their other skills as well such as cooperation, tolerance, and ability to cope with competition from fellow classmates.

Internet, on the other hand, if provided in a controlled and regulated manner, has its own good points:
1. Students gain access to vast stores of knowledge, that cover a variety of topics, which helps them do in depth study of the topics they are interested in,
2. Unlike textbooks, which cover a limited amount of text, and usually have this end note saying "this topic is beyond the scope of this book", internet provides an opportunity to explore more,
3. And lastly, the usual merits that are attached with internet : Accessibilty, convenience, and ease in storage are always there.

I think it somewhat summarizes what has been discussed in this thread.
As for the issue of reliability of internet sources, I agree with James that, just like it is very easy to be fooled by malicious sources, it is equally easy to spot reliable sources on internet.
Taking his example, if you really want to find out about a nation, trust sites either by united nations, reuters, or the various ministries of that nation itself, instead of "wikipedia". Thus, credibility of a source plays a very important role in ensuring that you get the CORRECT information.

I would say the ordinary way. Simple because the internet does not necessarily provide accurate information. Plus the internet provides many distractions which of course does not help when one is learning.
