Which technology will you use to contact your family or friends in abroad?

Which technology will you use to contact your family or friends in abroad?

For me I use the Internet Programs such as, MSN Messenger because this way can save much money and I can see my family or my friends by webcam instead of using cellphone, it spends too much money.

In the past, my mother contacted my elder brother in Beijing, China by cellphone and it's very extravagant because my mother have to paid money around 15baht(Thai Currency) for a time but nowadays, my mother contacts my elder brother by MSN Messenger and it saves her money a lot.

I think, this is greatly useful of technology that can connect worldwide people, economize money and save the time synchronisingly.

Surely, instant messaging programs are one of the ways to communicate people worldwide but technologies like Facebook, myspace or some websites like that are also alternative ways for me to contact them. Moreover, I think sometimes these websites are more useful because if the person we want to contact is not there at the moment we can leave them message and they will reply us later.

normally i use MSN or facebook or email because as everyone else said, it works and it's cheaper.

but sometimes snuggling up in bed and have a good old traditional phone conversation helps the homesickness. Also, emails have a very different feel than actual letters. Maybe it's all in my head but i think it's more heartwarming ^__^

I’m in my last year at high school. When you get to this level the majority of your friends have slowly left over the years and are now involved in life experiences across the world. Some are on the O.E others are experiencing life as a student in another country, on a student exchange.

I like to keep in contact with these friends and find out what exciting things they are getting up to.
I use MSN Messenger, Facebook, Bebo and email to communicate. Some of my friends have blogs and their own personal website which they fill with information about what they are doing for friends at home to check out.

I'd agree with Kam. Using the internet, be it Facebook, email etc can be cheap, easy and keep us updated, but a phone call or a letter can be something much more special. Though perhaps the prevalence of these other forms of communication have helped to give a phone call or a letter (handwritten even shocked) their "heart-warming" status.

I agree with Kam and Liza regarding their way of contacting their loved ones abroad.

I personally use email messaging most of the time because of the unlimited space and, yes, its cheap. Sometimes I called them to add personal touch big grin.

Skype is unbelievable. I can have my friends online on Skype all day as we work and it's like we're in the same country, even though they are in Montreal and I'm in NZ!

I also use Jajah to call my brother in Canada. It's free because we are both members and it basically just connects our phones together.

I don't so much use MSN. Facebook is the best way to stay 'passively' informed of all my friend's activities no matter where they are in the world.

If I travel then I use email to contact my family or I keep a blog.

My cellphone is pretty useless most of the time because if I'm traveling then i need to change networks etc... why can't there be a global network provider for cellphones??

personally, I think e-mail and yahoo are the best ways. It takes only several seconds to send an email. I usually chat with my friends by yahoo because it is free and friendly - user. Besides, I am able to see my friends if they use their webcams. Another way is facebook. Today, facebook is most popular social network. I often leave comments on my friends pages and so do they.

I like your comment about facebook being the most popular social network duhless.

In New Zealand facebook is more reserved for those who are in their late 20's-40's etc The teenage and pre-teen population use a website called bebo. Which is very cool smile
However I must admit that I have recently seen an explosion in facebook pages amongst my friends and other students at my school. Its quite an interesting trend to follow smile

What about myspace? How popular is that? I have heard alot of negative feedback with myspace, I think that is used more so by the americans.

You're right Marcus . Americans often use myspace. But I love facebook. Why don't you try it and I am certain that you will like it.

Recently, I have detected that facebook has many exciting and funny games. i tried and now I am a fan of its games. wink

Hmm, this thread applies pretty well to my situation. I have just come over to Singapore on scholarship from India. Just being normal, I felt way too homesick in the initial few months, and spent quite a fortune on phone calls.

However, now I have resorted tos omething much mmore economic and convenient. Skype ! smile It's great. I get to speak as well as see everyone back at home. Now I have reduced the use cell phones to a large extent, and just use Skype whenever I feel like speaking to my parents or relatives. If noone is online, I just leave a post on their walls on facebook. So that's how it goes...

I agree with Pamela: Skype is a simple and cost-effective way to stay in touch and super easy to use as well!

You tend to find that Facebook's layout is a lot more straightforward than sites such as Bebo and Myspace, and it's great at filtering spammers as well.
