[Poll] can gender equality be achieved?

i was recently having a discusiion with some coulegues and we were assessing that depending on the way our financial, economic and global status for the past centuaries it seems we can t completely achieve gender equality. because in eliminating some violences against women we are creating some.... by making special laws. conditions for valnurable women.... we are creating an artificial environment for sucess and they cant compete with men in the natural settings..... and some argued that the fact that our biological make up is different we cant completely achieve gender equality.. what do you guys think? can we achieve gender equality? as in completely. naturally, equal?
my point: YES WE CAN!
can we achieve gender equality?
yes
(5 votes for 62.5%)
no
(3 votes for 37.5%)

Yes, I am of the strongest conviction that gender equality could be achieved in the world.
It is unfortunate that most times when people talk about gender they assume the term only refer to women but this is or should not be the case.
The term is for both male and female.
If we only understand this concept, then Gender equality could be achieved for both sexes.
In view of the above, I am making a kind plea to us men to all ways treat women as equal sex positively and not opposite sex in the negative concept as even the creation of a woman was made from the rib bones of a man and not the back bones of a man which shows that both sexes are to do things side by side.
Therefore, we just need to recognise, protect, promote the rights and respect each other at all times so as to live in peace andharmoney.
This is so because, no body in this world is self sufficient to live isolatedly with out support from or to each sex. Otherwise, there would have been only one sex in the world.

I just don't think this is a yes or no question. Because men and women are biologically different, we will always be faced with certain inequalities in certain situations. In an environment where women have no access to birth control and survival depends on hunting a large dangerous animal, a woman is at a distinct disadvantage. In a modern society where survival of the species no longer depends on a woman's ability to give birth to 7 or 8 offspring, well that's a different situation. In a modern situation, different rules apply. It's no longer necessary, or even desirable, for a woman to have many children and so a woman is free to use her talents toward other goals. In a modern society, women and men are seen as having unique and talents. In this way they become valued for more than their ability to reproduce. Then they become equal.

I really hope gender equality is achieved. It is sad to see that it is still posing a problem now a days, but hopefully one day it will all be equal and everyone is treated the exact same. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Christine Culley

YES it can. Differences between men and women are all social constructs. Some theories even claim that physical differences are social constructs or a result of natural selection-- men traditionally preferred delicate women,so they get married and have kids, etc.
Non-physical "differences" are, of course, even easier to overcome because they are certainly social constructs. Prejudices will remain for a long time, but women are equal to men. Many, such as Eva or Pocahontas, have even gained power over men.
Media could play an important part in the inequality of women and men. The media needs to stop objectifying women as either a soley sexual being or the "victim."
Women are generally perceived as the "victim" humans, but men also have lower status in some areas. For instance, men have to submit a draft card, but women don't. The argument is often made that women tend to be weaker, but women are still in the military today. Thus, it is hardly fair that they should not have to enlist.

The way I see it as much as the subject "women can do any job a man can do" & "breaking the glass celing, equal pay 4 women". An overlooked part of this debate is equal empolyment for transgendered women (& men). There talk out in the workforce that those applying for jobs find they're "employable" until they tell that they're transgendered. In Austraila there's talk about weather there should be -gender quotas- for woman, if so what about the transgedered ones?

I am not sure if gender equality can be achieved, but it should definitely be achieved!
Men and women are born the same. Imagine a baby! We do not think babies as gendered human beings, but once we grow older, the society pushes men and women into different gender roles (men should become engineers or soccer players and women should be teachers or nurses). Since, the society we live in is a male-dominated one, generally women are the victims in every levels of the society (politics, education, work, sports, etc.)
The biological differences are not the reason why there is gender discrimination in the world, it is because of the cultural pressure that leads people to think that men and women are different and they should have different roles and responsibilities.
We have to work on so many issues, such as domestic violence, physical/sexual abuse, rape, equal pay, equal work roles, domestic work, etc.
Developing countries should be the focus first. For example: Iran! Gays, lesbians, transsexuals and bisexuals in Iran are persecuted everyday in public. Homosexuality is a crime punished by death it says under their government law. Maybe, we should first work on achieving human rights?
