How does technology impact your life?

What are your favourite information and communication technologies (ICTs)? How do you use them personally, and how often? What benefits and drawbacks do you associate with your use of technology?

For the students like me, technology is the best way of learning because it's a convenient way to search a lot of academic information and technology makes me know my goals until I took part the website competition like Microsoft IT Youth Challenge 2007-2008 and I won in the 2nd runner-up.
In addition, when I use the technology especially, internet , I always feel like I can see a whole new world.

It impacts me in many ways such as communication, studying and many more. I had some friends that are an exchange student in countries like america. Technology makes me to communicate with them easily using instant messaging or even facebook. Also, my uncle and I talk with each other by using webcam because he's not in Thailand. For my studies, I'm able to expand my knowledge by search it on the internet which I could find lots of information there. For example, when I don't know some terms when I'm revising for the test; I just go to search on the internet. That are mostly technology have impacted my life.

The internet opens the door of opportunity in an amazing way. There are things for all kinds of life styles. It's a media that is difficult to censor so it's a means for the freedom of expression.
In a strange way i think it allows a sense of equality and helps to stop prejudice.
However, the problem is, my country for example are not native english speakers and even with english in the school curriculum the number of people who speak english fluently is still low. So i feel the Thai people can not take advantage of the internet as much as other countries where there are many english speakers. There are also very few websites in thai.
Also, personally i get too attached to the internet sometimes. I end up spending all day in front of the computer sometimes just clicking from page to page. ^__^;;

I agree with Vaspol, a lot of our lives now revolve around computers. We use them at school and at home. To study, and to communicate with friends and family who are abroad. I know that I also talk to friends from school in the afternoon at home using instant messaging etc. I use social websites like bebo and Facebook to keep in contact with friends even though I see them on a day to day basis. I also use online news sites to keep up to date with the happenings in the world. When studying I tend to use the internet to use practice exam papers from past exams and to find the information I want. The internet is a useful tool.
But other than the internet I would include video cameras and editing software as useful technology for leisure. In my spare time I enjoy making videos with friends and uploading them to youtube etc. I use video game consoles like the PS3 for fun as well.
On a side note I find what Kam says about the Thai people not being able to fully take advantage of the internet unless they know another language like English quite interesting. Like how its mainly in English speaking countries that the internet has really taken off, its kind of sad really as for those without the internet are really missing out. I think Liza mentions it in one of her posts about the Shift Happens videos
e.g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeoKQbT8BKs
How a week’s worth of a daily national newspaper contains as much information as a person was likely to find in their entire lifetime in the 1800’s. Now imagine, with the internet and how many newspapers are online how much information is at our fingertips for us to take advantage of? So what is happening to the Thai people if they don’t have the advantage of using the internet like the rest of us? Its not really fair is it?

I pretty much use technology in whichever way I can to get whatever I need done quickly.
So at any given moment I can have all my (6?) email accounts open, both web-based and through Outlook, my calendar open (sync-ed to outlook, google and my phone), Facebook on, Meebo on, Skype on, search shortcuts to wikipedia, google, google scholar, bookmarklets to post to facebook, my citation manager, to my blog, Diigo for trawling through info on the net... oh and what about the normal telephone, texting (SMS) and maybe even talking to a person face-to-face.
Oh and my portable memory options. For when even the (NZ) internet is too slow to transfer information. :P

Thanks everyone for your contributions thus far! I thought I would "summarize" some of the main ideas and themes that have come up by creating some wordles:
http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/779380/ICTs_and_Life_1
http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/779397/ICTs_and_Life_2
http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/779403/ICTs_and_Life_3
http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/779406/ICTs_and_Life_4
http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/779410/ICTs_and_Life_5
I live far away from most of my family and have often lived abroad, so my favourite ICTs are those that facilitate communication with my friend and family. I love being able to keep in touch quickly and easily through instant messaging, video chat, Skype, social networking platforms like TIG and Facebook, and, or course, email. I also rely on the internet as my main source of information and news. We are so fortunate to have a world of information at our fingertips.
However, as has been raised in our discussion, access to ICTs is not universal and there are many barriers, creating a significant "digital divide." There are many components to the digital divide: Access to hardware in the first place; access to the internet; the quality of the internet connection; and the availability of relevant, useful information in one's own language. What role do you all think that students, teachers and schools could play in reducing the digital divide?

I used to live in a rural area in Aceh, Indonesia where I never know what IT is. Since Tsunami destroyed my hometown and took my families away from me, I moved to a metropolitan city to have my studies in Economics. Then, I knew about mobile, computer, internet and others. Obviously, technology have been helping me lots, not only in my studies but also make me more open minded and get many chance to explore my self and share it with others. where i am studying now is in Islamic Collage where we have to synergy the modern thing hand in hand with Islamic principles, quite challenging for me but now I know many things which i never knew before in Aceh

If you see in a perspective exclusive of education, I think that to a certain extent we've become so reliant on technology that it's changing what now it means to be human.
We're obese because we spend half our day in front of a television or computer screen and because the food we eat has be refined to the extent that it has more chemicals than nutrients.
We've reached the apex of human evolution, as there's simply no cause for us to move when we have cars and online shopping.
Our basic instincts of survival have degenerated, and we wouldn't know how to attain food without a kitchen and supermarket.
We can socialize without leaving the house and it's now possible to have a relationship with someone you've never been in the presence of.
Technology is advancing at such a exponentially rapid rate...Is it a matter of time before humans are no longer in control?
Just imagine living in a power strike...yikes

Technology impacts me most in the way everything becomes instant. We no longer have to wait for everything to be written down and published and sent to someplace where we can finally get it. Now we just wait for the pages to load.
Also with search engines, we cut down on the time and effort spent looking for the right material. Sure we still have to winnow out the relevant stuff, but most of the work is done for us.
It doesn't stop with the internet. We have cellphones that we can carry with us easily (unlike when they first came out) and communicate with anybody. More than a decade ago we'd have to be certain about where we wanted to be, when we wanted to be there etc. in advance. Now you can really 'live in the moment'.

Thanks to technology. It gives me opportunity to approach new ways of studying and entertaining. Today, it become much easier for me to look for information i need on the internet. It takes only several seconds to get the results while it cost me a lot of time and effort to search for info without internet. Furthermore, I get to know a lot of new and funny friends through internet. I believe we are getting closer to each others though we live thousands miles a way. Just make a phone call then we are able to hear a familiar and sweet voice of your friend or kin

technology- well, It makes my foreign language studying much easier and much more interesting. I like studying foreign language so technology helps me to learn from the native speakers without moving to anywhere and helps me save a lot of money

well, my best ICT buddy for now is my cellphone. I can do many thisng with my phone like surf the net, listen to music, watch videos, take a look of some of my photos and most importantly talk to my friends and loved ones who are far away from me. My cellphone is my comforter when i am alone and sad, helps me treasure some of my memories and find new friends.

Well, technology really helps me in running my life. everything become easier and faster to do.
Especially, INTERNET. hahaa
Yeah, all of my jobs become more efficient to do. I don't have to go to post office to send a letter. Because i only need to send an email. Then, by sending sms and chatting facilities, my interaction with others being closer.
But sometimes, technology also makes us lazier, and hard to move on. Haha. because, we think that everything are available. hehehe
but overall, i feel more good impact than bad impact of technology.
