Some cultures/nations in Europe have limited contact with mainland Europe due to certain geographic features. Certain countries like Britain, Iceland, and Crete are surrounded by water. Sicily is a province of Italy, but it too also counts. Certain countries and areas are isolated by geographic features like mountains. The Iberian peninsula(Spain and Portugal), the Balkans (Greece), Italy, and Norway and Sweden. In modern times inventions such as the airplane, railroads, automobiles, phone lines and internet have knocked down these barriers.
