how do advances in transportation effects the patterns of human settlement?

Hi,
i am doing a report for my geography class and i was reading this article in BBC news about how the French have set a new rail record and i was wondering if anyone had any input about how new advances in technology effect human settlement patterns. transportation is now much faster and efficient than ever and people have started settling in new places as a result. What are some other events that demonstrate this as well?
