How do you like to learn? How can technology enhance learning and student engagement?

Describe an educational experience that helped you really learn and connect with the subject material, so that you weren't just able to retain information but deeply understand and appreciate it. What are the characteristics of educational experiences that really contribute to this kind of deep understanding.
Were ICTs involved in this experience? If so, how?

Using analysis and mind-map can help me understand deeply.
For example
- In English subject
My teacher at Enconcept teach me to understand the 24 of tenses by 6 basic forms.

Technology involves this subject because my teachers at Enconcept use the musics to help the students to easily remember a lot of vocabulary and use the SMS system for the students who study in the other branches and confuse in something can send the messages to ask her about it.
Moreover, when I study another subjects by myself, I'm able to learn in websites and I can search a lot of information about the subjects that I'm interested. Around 80% of the websites that I enter to learn the subjects by myself have the examinations, video streaming, picture & sound and the evaluate system that show the analysis of my study result and what should I learn more or what am I have developed.

I think that technology can help in lots of fields of subjects. It depends how the teachers want to use technology as their aid. Technology can make things which are hard to be seen in reality to become touchable. For example, physics labs, mechanics, electrostatic, magnetics, the atomic models and many more, are hard to understand. The students doesn't see the real experiment. They only see it in their course book. Therefore, technology will take place to help students to understand more. By students will be the experimenter and analyze the lab by themselves. This will make the students to understand more and have a greater view on the content.

Last year my English teacher decided that school shouldn't finish at 3pm. We were running out of time in our school year and we didn't have enough time to revise in class about things we had covered for the end of year exams. So instead she organized us to have an account using software similar to Microsoft Office Live Meeting.
Here we would meet on a regular basis (once a week) and discuss something we had studied, be it a novel, movie or short story etc.
We would all collaborate and answer exam type questions, we could upload interesting content we found on the internet supporting our views, and best of all we had actual notes (our teacher was hopeless at giving us notes). We then stored these notes on our classes blog to use in the future.
We all found this new way of learning much more exciting and easier to use then just sitting in a classroom day in and day out. We became much more excited towards texts like Plaths poetry as we gained a new understanding. We as the technological generation were doing what we knew best, using computers and we were learning. Best of all the majority of the class who took the time to come to these online meetings went on to gain Merits and Excellences (part of our education systems exam grading) in the exams.

Interesting story. I think music is a powerful method to get our brains to remember things, although I am curious - do you think music helps with your understanding?
Also, you said you used many websites to study for school - how do you know which websites are reliable? i.e. how do you know they are "right"?

Do you think ICTs can replace doing the experiment yourself? For example, if you had the opportunity to actually go to these laboratories that study these phenomena (e.g. a physics lab), how do you think this learning experience is different to one that has been structured for you in a simulation?

Hey - great to hear that people are taking these technologies on board. I am curious to know about the attitudes of the other students when hearing about the "opportunity to do more work" for the first time. Obviously, you found it beneficial and it sounds as if you were eager to begin with - but how about the other students? If there were students that didn't participate at all, what were their attitudes like and why (if you know)?
Also, I am also curious to know the attitude of the teacher - were they quite confident with using these technologies already?
Also, I guess this is a personal preference question - would you have rather had these discussions face-to-face? I find that each has its own merits. I prefer face-to-face for intense, one-on-one discussions about work, but if there is a lot of information or many participants, I like using ICTs that allow me to take my time to digest the information and come up with a response. Also, because the information is stored, all participants can 'meet' at different times and places, so that's convenient.

I feel bored if we continue apply traditional teaching methods. It means that the teachers just speak and student listen inactively to them. Sometimes they write something on blackboard but they are not quite interesting.
I have experienced a class where the teacher applied new methods. In this method, we had more chances to raise our voices in class. Whenever we have new ideas or questions, we are granted to speak out our points of view. I felt more confident when i got something hard to say. i just only need to write a private message to teacher and get feedback in person.
To be honest, new methods aren't always the best method because it may diminish the ability to communicate directly among people.

In my geology 1 class, instead of having the proffesor talked a lot about concepts, he will bring us to the avr and let us watch documentaries about the origin of earth, earthquake, typhoons, etc. We were able to understand the basic concepts of geology (which is not our field)by watching those documentaries and having open forums after. Truly, geology is a boring subject if left alone with the professor

I can still remember during our class in organic chemistry and nuclear physics way back in high school. It is so hard for us to memorize formulas for organic substances especially when combining different substances. And also not all substances are allowed for laboratory experimentation considering that we are just hugh school students. Our organic chemistry teacher showed how it is being done through a computer simulator, and after that we did it on our own computers.
Another is with our nuclear physics. It is obviously difficult and prohibited at times to experiment on this kind of subject due to the fact that it entails great responsibility and might compromise safety and security. But that didnt stop us from learning and understanding this complex subject. Our teacher played a video presentation for the theoretical part and after that she introduced as to a software that will show us the effect when such nuclear component is formed or destroyed, as well as, it showed us the true world of nuclear fission and fusion reactions.
After that organic chemistry became one of our favorite subjects, and in nuclear physics, we're able to play with different isotopes and nuclear particles even just in the computer.
No harm done. We just learned.

Similarly to franmarie, a particularly helpful method our Biology teacher uses is regularly showing us videos and animations on the class projector in order to help us visualize complex concepts that are often hard to grasp.
Class projectors are great for this purpose and are a lot more practical than individual desktops and laptops, I believe, as it encourages students to work at a similar pace, share their work, and discourage being distracted.
I also download videos of biochemical reactions and copy them onto my iPod. There are also now audio study guides you can upload onto your iPod,which makes studying portable, accessible, and enjoyable. Such a wonderful fusion of education, technology, and popular culture!

I want to learn through an innovative way of teaching, and I am referring to the technology that we have today. It is true that technology plays a vital role in the learning process. Technology, in reality, is a means to development because of its high-level approach to the education process. One of a perfect example of technology is the computer, with the use of internet. Before, there is no such thins as online researching and online engaging with other people, but today it is as easy as one click. It makes learning easy because in one click people could already get all the necessary information that they want to know. Considering this, because of the high-level approach of the technology today, including its interactivity, learning and student engagement can easily be facilitated.

I agree to one of the answers presented here that traditional teaching methods are no longer effective today because the students today are more looking forward to be more educated through the technology that we have today.
I have a question to raise to all? Is the technology that we have today are used in your school tattoday? If yes, did it facilitate learning?

As a reponse to the question posted by Jessie, I can absolutely attest that the use of technology (multimedia devices, robotics among others) in our school is very effective in facilitating learning. We're able to easily comprehend complexities of tertiary topics, it also developed positive attitude towards studying, and also, we're able to compete globally considering that we came from a public school.
