Hello!
I'm Michael, and along with Katherine Walraven (aka kagawa), we'll be the team from TakingITGlobal helping to facilitate the students portion of the 2009 Innovative Teachers Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
We're excited to have you part of these discussions - and even more thrilled that a number of you will be selected, based on your participation, to join us in person for three action-packed days of learning from each other and sharing our ideas with some of Asia's most innovative teachers.
There will be a number of threads started for you to participate in - feel free to also start new threads on ideas or questions you think are critical to ensuring that education is innovative and response to your needs as students.
For now, in this thread, feel free to respond by introducing yourself - why you decided to participate and what you hope to contribute. I hope to meet many of you in person in Malaysia!

Hi everyone!
My name is Kat and I am the Education Program Manager at TakingITGlobal. I am relatively new to TIG, having joined the team in October, and am really excited to be participating in this online dialogue about the role of technology and innovation in education. Young people have a unique and critical perspective, and I encourage you all to openly share your thoughts, experiences, and ideas on this fascinating topic!
As Mike mentioned, please feel free to contribute to existing threads or start new ones! But first, please make sure that you post an entry within this thread to say hello and let us know more about you and why you are taking part!

Hello!
I am Natharat Mongkolsinh from Bangkok, Thailand. I know how difficult my name is to say and to type, so you can call me Kam.
I just found out about this from a friend and I thought it sounded like fun. I have done alot of speeched and debated this last year and I enjoyed them alot. However, no matter how grand the speech is, it doesn't really make changes. I see this as an opportunity to actually DO something.
Also, I grew up in the US on a university campus. It was a very international community and I miss that very much. I love the diversity and see how much we all have in common dispite the differences.
I really look forward to discussing these topics with all of you. ^___^

Hello!,
I’m Marcus from New Zealand.
I'm currently attending Te Awamutu College which is a school of about 1000 students in the small town of Te Awamutu.
I'm passionate about involving more techonology and community based projects into our teachers lessons for a more diverse and engaging learning experience.
I am a part of a student based project called S.P.L.I.C.E (Supporting personalised learning in community environments). The point of this project is to target the wider community. We want to better inform them about changes in education and ask them how they think the community can work with schools to provide our students with an excellent 21st century education.
Last year I was also part of another project called ‘The Student Voice Project’. This project was about the changes to learning and teaching that we thought were necessary in our schools in the 21st century. We made a 30 minute video that was viewed by educators throughout New Zealand and even as far wide as Canada. I was then part of a team which actually took this video to student teachers in there 2nd year and presented it to them as their first lecture for that semester.
To view these videos please feel free to visit our Learning Coordinator (‘Guide on the Side’) Mrs Dyets Blog. http://mindblown.edublogs.org/2008/06/09/weve-got-a-message/
And please bookmark our S.P.L.I.C.E project blog http://spliceproject.edublogs.org/ to be one of the first to view our latest videos once they are completed.
Aside from education, I like to spend my spare time with friends and family. I enjoy reading, video games, computers and above all Squash :P
I'm really looking forward to the chance of getting to know you all and helping to contribute in the real world to make a difference!
Cheers,
Marcus *

Kia Ora,
I’m Liza, I was born and mostly raised in Canada, but currently I am quite happily residing in beautiful New Zealand.
I heard about this through working on the SPLICE project (see Marcus’ post, April 23, 2009 @ 09:03 PM) which is looking at our local schools, and was keen to get a view of education on an more international level. I’ve never had the chance to be involved in this style of discussion and I am looking forward to the experience.
I think I have always been very invested in my education because I come from a family where learning is valued, actively sought out and supported. I enjoy school because I do my best to seize the opportunities given, and find making education better for me and everyone else an exciting prospect.
Thank you!
Liza

Hi Natharat!
Thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself! Care to share why you use the nickname Kam? I'm curious. *
You are right! This is an opportunity to do something! We aren't having this discussion and helping to bring students to the Innovative Teachers and Students Conference just for show. Your experiences and ideas are of great value, and should inform educational theory and practice. This is why up to 15 dialogue participants will receive support to attend the conference in person, to share the ideas that come out of this dialogue with the teachers attending the conference.
I loved your comment about being exposed to diversity through living on a university campus in the US. We really do all have a lot in common, regardless of where we live. How do you think teachers could use technology to connect their students with students in other areas so that they can learn about other people, places, and perspectives?

Hey Marcus!
Thanks for saying hi!
S.P.L.I.C.E. sounds really interesting! Can you tell us more about it? What has been the response of your community to the information that you have shared with them? What ways of engaging with students and schools have community members identified? What does a 21st Century education mean to S.P.L.I.C.E.? And, what does it mean to you?
"The Student Voice Project" sounds like an amazing experience, and I'm sure it has provided you with a lot of ideas to share here! I look forward to seeing the videos and will sign up to the S.P.L.I.C.E. project blog to keep on top of developments! Could you share share some of the main ideas, lessons, and suggestions contained in the 30 minute video you developed?
I'm also a big fan of squash!! It is one of my favourite sports! I also love swimming (and was part of a swim team for most of my youth), running (I'm currently training for a half-marathon), and yoga.
Thanks again for sharing! I'm looking forward to getting to know you!

Hi Liza,
Where in Canada were you born and raised? I grew up in Prince George, in the center of British Columbia, moved to Ottawa in 2004 to pursue my Master's degree, and then to Toronto in the fall to start working for TIG. I've also lived in Saskatoon and Thunder Bay, as well as overseas in Germany, Japan, South Africa, and Mozambique. I love traveling, and would definitely love to visit beautiful New Zealand!
It is great to know that you are also involved in S.P.L.I.C.E. I think that you and Marcus will have some great knowledge to share as a result of your involvement. I really look forward to your contributions!

I lived in Brantford, Ontario, about 1 1/2 hours (depending on traffic) from Toronto. If you follow hockey at all it was the birth place of Wayne Gretzky .
SPLICE has been fantastic and is probably instrumental to my current views on what I'd like from school. I have always been quite happy with the school system, but I've been in my element getting out into the community, as well as interviewing teachers and planning and working with a range of ages. I think it is better preparation for the future than the regular school structure.

Ah greetings all
(hello Cherrie!)
I'm Pamela, I'm a Canadian citizen but have spent the majority of my life growing up in NZ.
2 years ago I set up the yMedia Group with a friend. It's a social enterprise that aims to emphasize the power of new media, showing students that they can use digital skills to their advantage. (check out www.ymediagroup.org)
Our major project is the yMedia Challenge, a competition that connects tertiary students with non-profit organisations and top businesses through new media projects. (Check out www.ymediachallenge.co.nz)
Currently on my plate:
- Organising the yMedia Challenge 2009 with 9 other volunteers.
- Organising Lunch in a Bag - an event co-hosted by the Tindall Foundation that brings together 50 of NZ's young social leaders to discuss the challenges they feel NZ is facing and brainstorm possible solutions. (www.ymediagroup.org/lunchinabag)
- Working with Business Mechanix part time, trying to get Live@EDU and Outlook Live into secondary schools in NZ
- Working with the Seuang River Project (seuang.wordpress.com) to develop online learning games for secondary school students in NZ to create awareness/educate them on the environmental and social challenges facing the villages on the Seaung River in Laos
When I'm not passionately working.. I'm running, practicing yoga, cooking or sleeping.
Excited to see what's happening here!
Pamela

Hiiii
My name is Meaghan and I'm a student of Macleans College, New Zealand.
I only just stumbled upon TIG and am thrilled at having found a community of conversant youth with similar aspirations and degree social concern.
I think that substantial education is vital for youths who are growing up in a society that heavily relies upon technology and values not only intelligence, but also opinion.
A matter that I am concerned with is the partiality and inequality of educational achievement, and how this can ultimately be traced to economic disparity and government policy.
I've been selected as a NZ delegate to the 2009 United Nations Youth Conference and can't wait to discuss these issues and to witness a future of proactive leaders who think with the depth of those on TIG!
Ciao

Hello to everyone. =]
My name is Zay and I live in Te Awamutu, New Zealand. I am 6th form at Te Awamutu College. I was born and lived in Japan for 7 years but moved here. My mum's Japanese and dad's Kiwi. I
Like Marcus and Liza, I'm part of the S.P.L.I.C.E project. It's pretty cool trying to make a difference to your community especially when others from around the world have been taking note.
My general goal in life is to help change the world and I thought this would be awesome to participate in. =D
I plan to become a doctor and that's a career where you have to constantly keep learning about new diseases and update techniques etc so this is a pretty good forum to be part of.
