Effects of Computers and the Internet on Society

Before we know it, technology is going to pass us by. With the invention of the computer and the Internet, the possibilities are endless. Society is changing by leaps and bounds, with no chance of a stopping point in the near future. All this change is dealing with computers and the effects that it will have on the way we live tomorrow. The Internet affects us in every way, most importantly with our social lives, our jobs, and our entertainment. Our social lives are not just communicating with telephones and mail anymore. Going “on-line” is the new way we like to communicate with people. Chat rooms on the Internet are open for people to talk and explore with other people who may live on the other side of the world or the other side of the street. E-Mail is also another popular way to correspond with others. Users can electronically send mail to another person with an on-line mailbox, simply by typing in their message and sending it by the click of a button. Two seconds to send e-mail to someone on the other side of the world is much quicker than a week or more through the ordinary mail. The Internet can also affect our jobs. Computers can calculate and figure out things much quicker than the average person. This process cannot only save time, but money too. Stock trading is now on the Internet, along with banking and any other type of business you could imagine. The world wants thing to be quick and easy. The best answer to that is to have a computer do it for you. In the future, hundreds of millions of jobs will be taken away from honest hard-working employees and will be given to computers. No matter what choices we make, or what plans we change, these outcomes are going to become real. Why would a business pay someone to take phone orders, when a computer can do it in less time and make it both cheaper and easier for the business and the buyer? Computers and the Internet are definitely affecting the way we entertain ourselves. The most basic example is card games. If the computer can deal out cards on a screen with the click of a button, why would anyone want to deal out a deck of cards manually and have to clean them up afterwards? On the Internet, you can gamble with on-line casinos, place bets on a horse race, or even watch movies. People can do all of these activities in the comfort of their own home. No gas money is wasted or time spent driving around to find entertainment so people are happy. The inevitable outcome of this magnificent invention is going to change the world. Society is happy about the way things are changing. Cheaper is better, less time consuming is better. With the choice of having a computer and being on-line, there is almost nothing you cannot do. This remarkable idea of the Internet is going to revolutionize the way we live in the future.

effects of computers of internet and society

Whilst we agree with you, Shakti, that the time it takes to send/receive emails is approaching the speed of light ... speed has its own consequences. What it has brought with it is an uncontrolled and at times overwhelming amount of often unsolicitated and dubious information .. that is useless. As a result it can be time consuming to wade through the rubbish and as far as work productivity, can result in the opposite of what is desired i.e. costly time wasting.
How many times have we sent an email, in haste, to an unintended recipient? How many times have we received an angry response from a friend that has destroyed a friendship? Is speed all it is cracked up to be? Whatever happened to leisurely and thoughtful communication?
When we embrace new technologies with excitement about their life changing possibilities ... we should spare a thought for what is being lost in the process.

We the policypeople agree. What ever did happen to leisurely and thoughtful communication?
Is faster better...we feel that communication which takes place with thought and interaction is much more important because there is a natural and human element which comes with this type of communication

I believe faster is better but like all inventions its how you use it. The internet facilitates the Worlds movement to becoming one global village. It has utterly destroyed all barriers of communication and has granted much higher levels of connectivity than we have ever seen before.
Yes, as the use of computers grows, the need for human labour will be reduced. An example is the mechanization of farms. Machines harvest faster and more efficiently without needing pay, so of course they will be preferred. This also has a good effect of the cheaper the labour the cheaper the fruit. As the advent of computers rise food prices will fall as there arent hundreds of labourers to pay. But this does not answer to the thousands who will be left jobless, what to do then? training.
Just as there was a stone age and all the others, ythis is the age of computers. Doesnt make sense we throw up our hands saying its all unfair and give up. People aren't going to discard the internet so willy nilly. Seek computer training so you dont get washed away in the electronic wave of our world.
We the users of the internet must ensure that the basic fabric of socialization doesnt rest entirely on facebook and msn. The future of it all will rest with us for we are the ones who will set this change in stone. The age of computers and the internet is the age we must strive to conquer and use the internet to unite the world into one global village where we can share and learn. It has been and will be always be up to us. The internet is a blind tool that will lead us where ever we wish to go. Whether it leads us forward......or back --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- !xotîz

Yes, all of you brought up great and interesting points. I do agree that the Internet has brought many new conveniences (i.e speed of sending new e-mails), as well as new ways to connect with people (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, and this website). These changes are happening very quickly without too much time to process these changes. I do agree with some of the previous comments that we do need to be aware of these changes and to think critically about what these changes are doing to our society.
As an educator, I have to learn how to adapt new ways to teach my students (most of them are addicted to using technology and the computer non-stop). I have to keep up with them in order to make the material more accessible. Now, just because I use these new tools doesn't mean the students shouldn't know and learn basic critical thinking skills and reading and writing properly. Therefore, there has to be a balance between embracing everything that technology has to offer us and not forgetting how to do basic skills as well.

What are the effects of computers and the Internet on Society?
One answer is as follows.
Just look at the track record of A Better Community for All (ABC4All) since joining TIG in 01/06.
From then till now: via the ABC4All Global Mentoring TEAM Project
ABC4All Mentors, already TIG members, a requirement to participate with ABC4All, have become involved representing 106 countries in the world.
1/7 of all ABC4All Mentors is from Nigeria, and although it is not a race, it has always been the case that more Mentors from Nigeria have become involved.
Many ABC4All Mentors have answered the question, "What would make your personal community better for all?"
11 ABC4All Mentors have launched Local ABC4All
A number of ABC4All Mentors are participating with the developing HEALING MOVEMENT for the world, called, the CELEBRATION OF ONENESS MOVEMENT;
http://abc4all.net/coomovement.htm
In short, the impact of just this one example of how the Internet has facilitated a Global Project in the world bringing Global Humanitarian Relief via advanced technologies is obviously great, but the full impact will be revealed as time passes.
Respectfully,
Burton Danet, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, ABC4All

As with many things, I think it is hard to classify technology in terms of black and white: positive or negative, good or evil? Computers, cell phones, television, and the internet afford us many opportunities, but also luxuries without which the current generation probably would starve for something to do. Therein lies the problem with technology; while it spreads resources and education farther than has ever been possible, it has also removed some people from the world around them.
I think a big challenge we face as a world is how do we straddle the two worlds? More and more, with newspapers-cum-blogs and the like, to be involved with the world you need to be involved with technology. At the same time, I think it is hard to connect with a world of which you have seen none. Similarly, human relations should be just that--human. At least 70% of human communication is done without the spoken word. If you only know people as a screen name or a number, think of how much is lost in translation. I think it is important to stay plugged in to society, but how healthy is it to go wireless?

I agree that speed isn't everything. Have you guys seen the youtube video about the ungrateful youth in society we have now. Some comedian did it:
Everything is amazing, but nobody's happy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOtEQB-9tvk
Funny, but true.
Society has changed so much. We have a website where Christian dating is talked about, ON THE INTERNET! Even a niche like Christian Asian Dating is talked about, and Christian dating services and Christian matchmaking.
People have such busy lives, spending it on Facebook and Myspace instead of actually communicating and meeting people in the real world.
My brother in law (who is a computer geek) was refusing to get on Facebook because it was going to suck the hours ot of his day and prevent him from having real world experiences.
Something to think about.
Chris

The internet takes man from a centralized control to decentralized.
Example. Web 2.0 online form generators like
http://www.formsping.com
http://www.elbowspace.com
http://formsite.com
http://www.fospace.com
have made it possible for the average Joe to make their site interactive. Where before these sites existed, interactivity was reserved for large corporation ( because of development time & costs).
Other web 2.0 sites like http://www.youtube.com, decentralize who can publish entertainment.
I believe the decentalization factor is one that greatly benefits humanity.

Thats why we need to know these. Well, I agree with everyone. I am happy with everybody's point of view. Computer and technology has become an everyday thing, we cant just wake up and do away with anything technology. The best thing is to know how to avoid certain defects in technology and know the first approach to some incidents. For instance, every accident needs a first aid treatment. It mustn't come from a doctor. You can do it urself if u know how. Same thing goes with computers. The best thing to do is to get some basic security tips for especially hack prevention.

Computer and Internet effective lives in society, it helped people get nearer to their family, live meeting, conference through Internet, interacting with various people, around the world, but it is also responsible for wrong use, pornography and various criminal activity, which is the worst drawback of internet.

The internet is what brings people from all over the world together. So have many friendships and even relationship developed out of internet chat rooms, game rooms or forums.
I for instance met my husband on a web game channel. We were from different countries, actually even from different continents and now we are married living happily together in the US. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Home Decor Accents | Garden Accents
