The main problem is power supply. Where are they supposed to charge these laptops? Or am i missing something?

XOs run on 3-5 watts of power; if you are using one as a bookreader it can use as little as 1 watt. You can run one off of a personal solar panel; or charge a dozen at a time with a solar blanket.
Power is certainly an issue, but not a central bottleneck.

OLPC is organizing a summer program this year for university student groups:

What do you think of this? Do you know people who have applied? There was an effort to get applications submitted from groups at African universities, but more of the applications have come from students in the US so far.

Thanks for the clarification. I was almost sure that i was missing something. Makes sense now, because the primary aim for using them is reading as opposed to watching movies and other activities that people without power concerns engage in.

Wonderful to know that TIG partnered with OLPC. We at Colorss are trying to partner with the $10 laptop for all project in India.

I would like to salute TIG for bringing up this discussion where we can freely express our views, views that would bring a positive change in strengthening and building our world.
This is a good innovation to help the under privileged children around the world. I happen to be a youth who cares a lot about Children and I work with them a lot, I work with kids from the north who were affected by 22year LRA war which has left most of them traumatized, homeless and lost hope. I managed to get one of the Laptops that was sent from USA for testing, well its more of a practicing tool since you cannot extract or transfer data from storage device which renders it less important in Northern Uganda. Its good for typing skills, games, drawing and painting. When we tried to access the internet, it was impossible and the local area network would be active if we had more than 2 of a kind. Is there anyone who knows how to configure the internet protocol of this laptop? Or how can we print the data from the computer? Or is it possible to access internet services when near a hotspot? The other problem could be that we are in a place with limited power supply, but this Laptop has a better life batteries which makes it good to carry along. The Laptop has a good web cam for recordings but as I stated earlier, we cannot retrieve the photos or Videos.
Another good but complicated for the Children is the sensitivity of its touch pad/mouse, its not stable it moves so fast which makes it difficult for them to follow what they are doing therefore loosing concentration.
Unfortunately this Laptop was only brought for experimentation and when the Kids had just started enjoying and learning how to use, it was taken away. My question is, is there anyone who knows how we can get these Laptop per Child initiative to help improve on the technology in this war ravaged areas with less access to technology?
Helping 45 former child soldiers in a war affected children’s school located 5 in Gulu District, I offer art therapy counseling and arts and crafts skills to OVC’S in the same service area.

I was born and reside in Nigeria and I am particularly interested in this project, however, like Yashoda noted, we have gross epileptic power supply, I really think OLPC should find a way to harness one resources we have in abundance i.e. sun to make solar powered versions.

Great idea....hope every child would have access to computers..But is it possible very soon or will it take time to get established? I need more to learn, need more information on it.
