Pope Benedict XVI said on his way to Africa Tuesday that condoms were not the answer in the continent's fight against HIV. He has said that the Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.

Yes I read it on the newspaper an I couldn't believe my eyes.
I mean the values which he talks about are important, yes, but we are talking about HIV/AIDS!!!!
Millions of people did because of it, and millions of people will die. Millions of children lost their parents, ecc.
CONDOMS ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HIV/AIDS, AND IF THE POPE SAYS IT IS NOT LIKE THAT, HE HIDES BEHIND THE CHURCH OR IS LIVING IN THE 18TH CENTURY
CONDOMS ARE NOT JUST IMPORTANT AGAINST THE FIGHT OF HIV/AIDS BUT ALSO AGAINST SEXUALLY TRASMITTING DISEASES!!!!!

Carmen, you are very right...Well, I have often cracked a joke based on what an old friend of mine told me, that during his own youth, the fear was of gonorrhea and syphilis and there was penicillin, and I bantered back that my time brought more powerful ammunitions against the gonorrhea and syphilis before Chlamydia, etc came on board. But for the younger generation, HIV virus is a killer and the need to be more careful.
A young friend of mine whom I thought was very smart, one day called me and said she met a young dude and a night stand and now pregnant. My initial concern for her was HIV but she was more on the pregnancy. That to me is the summary of the younger generation in their understanding of what unprotected sex can lead to.
We need to carry the message starting from home to our sons and daughters that having unprotected sex is playing with death, period!

Is the message of the Pope irresponsible? In my view, No! Whatever the Pope has said he has said in context; when sex is practiced within the framework under which it was primarily designed for pro creation, ceteris paribus! He has not asked people to start sleeping around with so many partners neither has he ask people to be sleeping with people they are not married to.
The Pope or indeed the church is not unaware that people are having sex outside of marriage or that men are sleeping with men and women with women, that people are doing it does not make it right! The bible has a constant standard and as custodians of the word of God, they have the responsibility of telling it as it is, whether the word agrees or not.

In many countries, people deliberately infect another with HIV virus based on having a knowledge of being HIV positive and not using condom before having sex with that person tantamount to Knowing and Purposely causing Grievous Bodily Harm in lieu of attempted murder or even first degree murder if the other infected person dies. To prevent spreading of HIV, condom is highly needed.

Condoms don't always work, and shouldn't be used as an excuse to be promiscuous nor adulterous. But they can still be used to prevent childbirth inside a marriage.

It is the non-usage of condom that has made AIDS worse globally. The way things are HIV positivity will be almost like having Diabetes Mellitus. It can be managed and will only kill slowly through ensuing complications especially if the critical levels are not maintained.

I understand what you mean. but HIV/AIDS can also be transmitted from the parents or with a syringe ecc.
SO ALSO IF YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE AFTER ALL THE RELIGIOUS RULES -- YOU CAN GET INFECTED!!
And than it is very important to protect you and your partner. And the savest way is to use a condom!!

 Abstinence is one of the methods to avoid HIV infection. But no one can avoid the biological needs of the humans. Yes, there should be proper use of the condom. Also I agree that there are methods of prevention of HIV infections that are transmitted through other routes like blood transfusion, syringes, vertical transmission(from mother to child). But for sexual route of transmission, HIV infection and other RTIs, STIs like syphilis, gonorrhea can only be prevented by Condom use.
Whatever pope says....it doesnt matter because almost everyone in the world knows about HIV infection, the truth is that the infection is increasing day by day despite of the knowledge of transmission.
So, proper condom use is the best method for the prevention of HIV infection for the sexually active age groups..

I re-affirmed them thus echoing my prologue debate that the pope's condemnation of the usage of condoms rather than the practice of sexual abstinence will help curtail the marauding scourge of 'HIV/AIDS' in Africa continent, and the World in general.

I want to say to the people of the world that having only the knowledge about HIV and AIDS in not enough, there should be positive change in attitude and behavior towards HIV and AIDS.
Please never think that 'the disease is not for you its for others', it's for all those who don't have rational and responsible approach towards any situation you face.

I also would like to recommend the leaders and responsible ones not to make lousy excuses in the matter of combating HIV and AIDS.
Like, It is mentioned in one of the threads that HIV and AIDS can be prevented by abstinence only. What I regard abstinence as a totally a personal matter and it can be useful to those who avoid sex in the fear of transmission of HIV infection. Also it is impracticable and unnatural for the human beings who need to satisfy their sexual needs.
The responsible ones should focus and promote the matters like safe sex, proper use of condoms, single partners, not giving births by HIV innfected ones and screening of blood before the transfusion.
If so, then only their voices will be heard and it will make change to some extent.

The issue of HIV/AIDS is real, and should not be ignored anymore. It's not the time of grumbling around....Our leaders must warm-up to take responsibilities, otherwise, it will be out of control.

The Pope's stand is at best irresponsible and ignorant and at worst criminal. His words may well send millions more innocent people to their premature death. Check out www.trueaidscure.com . The informaton will shock you. There is plenty of false information in the media and more information which is being suppressed.
