[Poll] Earth Hour
March 13, 2009 - 05:43 PM

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grew into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people flicking the switch. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

What will you be doing on March 28th from 8:30 to 9:30 pm?

I find Earth Hour as a great, great & great idea.

Who could not give up on using electricity for just one hour as exprision of unity with eenviroment do not worth to enjoy with it.

I also suggest that the governments collaborate to provide the organization working on that with informations about the consumed electricity in every city during this hour and the city which achive less consumption be honored.

Hopefully earth hour will increase to more than 1 hour in the future and that it becomes an everyday practice to consume a sustainable level of energy.

I was walking outside and looking into the windows to find most of them dark. The street lights were one, which was neglectful of the City, but made it possible for teens to go out in groups and enjoy the event in the streets.

The local University hockey game was on TV, but it felt good to turn everything off and made my family feel a part of something great and the possibility of doing this more often is apparent to everyone. I know that every time we save electricity, we are making the world brighter.

I agree that there was a significant impact in doing Earth Hour. It was such a great united cause and one that can be afforded by all who care about the future of our enviroment. I believe in my country, New Zealand the electricty rate dropped by 3.5% just over that small hour! Can't wait to do it again!smile

EARTH HOUR IS AVERY WONDERFUL INITIATIVE.IT WAS CELEBRATED IN CAMEROON WITH MIXED FILLINGS. BUT THE EXPERIANCE WAS VERY GOOD.IN OUR FAMILY HOME I IMPOSED IT THERE AND THE CHILDREN WERE VERY EXITED TO SEE THIS AND ASKED FOR IT THE NEXT DAY.SOME OTHER FEW PEOPLE PRACTICED IT AS I WALKED DOWN THE STREETS AND LOOKED THROUGH THEIR WINDOWS.

Atta ur,

That is an interesting take on "earth hour" to go beyond the survival of the earth biologically speaking to include the survival of the ways in which human beings exist on the earth that should be sustained (i.e. like well-being, and good health).

Peace & Thanks,

Sheridy

Earth Hour isn't a very good idea. It may make people aware that we are doing "something wrong" when it comes to the environment, but it really doesn't help. What difference will switching off lights for an hour each year make ? Won't people still be burning candles ?.. Think about it. Candles still release pollution. So what's the point. We should go back to what we were taught in school - to turn off electricity using appliances and lights when not in use. Why have a light burning in the next room when no one's there. The more important thing is to make people realize that light pollution is a serious issue. Birds confuse bright city/building/skyscraper lights for the sun's light and many die in flight because they crash into buildings. So maybe we could have rules to dim the lights on all commercial buildings after a certain period of time after sunset. Light pollution also makes it difficult to spot stars in the night sky as well as creating sleeping problems in human beings. The concept of Earth Hour is well-meaning, but its impractical in practice.

I couldn't agree more Siddiqua. Earth Hour, should be "earth always" as in we always need to consider our impact on the environment in whatever we do, in addition to keeping ourselves accountable to all the billions of other species that share this beautiful planet with us...like birdssmile
