Slumdog Millionaire Film
March 13, 2009 - 02:12 PM

And the Oscar goes to...Slumdog Millionaire!

Every so often a wonderful movie about India wins a series of Oscars promising to finally put the face of this massive culture on the map. 'Gandhi', 'A Passage to India', and now Slumdog Millionaire. But after the initial euphoria, the world eventually goes back to life as they know it. This time, after sweeping the Oscars with eight awards, India's slumdogs are headed back to the slums.

The movie has reached massive acclaim in a very short span of time. Westerners love it as it offers the romance of a rags to riches story artfully crafted by the creative hand of Danny Boyle (director). Indians on the other hand have had mixed responses about what the movie portrayed and the fact that its producers have exploited those who live in abject poverty.

So the question is, did India actually win? Or was it simply a conveinent subject for Hollywood?

I really loved the movie, its an amazing movie and opened my eyes about true problems in India, about poverty, child prostitution, child labor and how out of all of that, a boy becomes a man and reaches his highest dr
eams and attributes.

Also the cast was made up of actual people who do live in India, so I would say its based on a true life story that could happen for anyone, but this movie is focused in India though.

Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismali who played Latika and Salim in the earlier scenes of the movie were actually from the slums.

There is a BBC short documentary about the reality of the child actors' lives and living conditions.

the success of the story is because it is made of actual people who experience in reality what is the kind of life in india. Viewers not just like the story but they also feel the story itself.

the aim of the movie is to serve as an open eye to what is transpiring in india.
ok..the movie is excellent, successful, and everything.. But the question is what to do against the poverty that is happenning in india specially the children living in slum.

Yes, I agree on all your points, the movie was a heart-felt movie, I liked how they showed this boy encounter the unreachable, and conquered it to make his goals, thoughts and dreams reachable and make it reality for him.

Hmmm and I also loved how they had a little North American idea [Who Wants to be a Millionaire] and how that was tied into the heart of the movie. I think because of that the movie turned out the way it did and appealed to Western audiences just as well.

A movie is limited in what it can do. It can show people what's happening, but if no one is willing to change, nothing is going to happen. People have to make changes in their own communities if they want something to change.

One example is what happened in Liberia, when women took a stand and asked for peace. Their efforts are captured in a documentary called, "Pray the Devil Back to Hell." They were regular women in Africa, in the middle of a war-torn region, but they made a decision that they refused to live like that anymore and changed the course of history. A movie can only tell a story, the people are the ones writing it.

Hi I am sorry that happened to that woman, but also I do agree that it is neccessary for people to take a stand in order for changes to be made in the world.

I was slightly surprised by the fact that Indian members did not express interest in this thread...

Also - could you clarify the meaning of the question in the original post -

"did India actually win?"

Slumdog Millionaire, in my opinion, won because of shock value. I don't want to criticize the movie or the motives of the people who made it - but -

1. It did not help the people living in those slums in any way - other than the child actors and their families maybe...

2. While it showed a true picture of just how bad life can possibly get for India's poorest - it showed only that. It looked at a part, an aspect of India - and now many people outside India are equating the lives of most Indians to what was shown in slumdog millionaire.

There is too much in India that needs to be changed, to be corrected, but that's not all of India.

Slumdog told the people who see only India's growth and development that India's poorest still need help, but, on the other hand, I believe slumdog has created a jaundiced image of this country in the minds of many people who do not know much about India other than what they saw in slumdog.
