Uniting to end violence against women and girls
March 13, 2009 - 10:58 AM

Every year, March 8 mark the International Women's day globally. The theme for 2009 is "Women and men united to end violence against women and girls".

In years past so many issues have been raised but year 2009 theme shows that the violence that women go through cannot be stopped only by women but by the collective effort of both women and men, ladies and guys; boy and girls, etc.

Its not all about celebrating this day, but its about creating a wider awareness and making it a continous issue. Personally, I pity the female folks and one could see that most times they ownly like to put themselves in such situations that result in violence.

Over the years, the UN and its technical agencies have promoted the participation of women as equal partners with men in achieving sustainable development, peace, security, and full respect for human rights.

What in your opinion can make the violence against women and girls stopped?

In my studies of gender equality, I have come across some deeply ingrained cultural practices and beliefs which are highly detrimental to women. It makes me really upset when I consider that the safety, support and life chances I receive and take for granted are not shared equally across gender lines.

I think the first step towards a more just society is being aware of the systemic unfairness of the systems we live in. Then we can work towards creating positive spaces where we can question and challenge these values.
