Your Identity

How do we percieve ourselves?
Upon asking someone "Who you are?" you may expect many different things come back in reply. Some may see themselves through academics and will say:"student/professor", while others may see themselves through their ethnicity so you may get a "I am a ______ (nationality)" as your answer. Of course there will be those who see themselves through their proffesion and many other possibilities depending on even more prisms that define how we percieve ourselves in this world.
I want to ask you the same question:
Who/what you are? What are the three main things that define your identity?
Please explain why did you answer like that and how do you see your culture/enviorement shaping your answer.
Some time ago I have believed that there are many things that our enviorement can shape but that identity is something solely ours and defined by our own inner being. Recently I have begun to realize that is not the case, as the matter of fact, that it is the complete opposite - our identity is directly affected by the place we live in and people we interact with.
I would like to investigate this subject among others and question this thesis, so I will very anxiously look forward to your answers.
Much love from Serbia,
Katarina

I think you’re right. Our daily experiences influence our character, the people we meet, the places we see, spoken or unspoken words, smells, books, TV, magazine, everything has an influence to us. Something more and something less, but that’s normal.
Who I am?
I am Carmen.
The 3 main things which describe myself?
wow, that’s hard. I can’t describe myself in 3 words (so here is the 1st thing that describes me: I can’t describe ANYTHING in a few words ☺☻)
I have a lot of good and bad characteristics. Every day I find out something new about myself, I am living now in an important period, I am up to leave my old live and to begin something absolutely new. I am up to leave my family and friends, to do that what I want to do in life, to follow my dreams.

well it may be a difficult subject to actually ellaborate on, but one has to find ways to identifying oneself indeed. I would sum it all by saying
"i am an african" by so saying, i pin-pointed one aspect that one can identify him/herself by, nationality, a core evidence to identity. I mean one immidiately picks up a certain character in individuals by knowing ones nationality. It is well known to most of people around the world that countries like Burma, Zimbabwe, America, Asia, South Africa and the likes have got their own unique history in their own respect. I'm an African national, born and raised in Southern part of Africa. Due to the global status of economy and politics, one would be raised in this kind of societies that would be a lot of teachings on whats happening in our invironments. One suddently become so steriotypical about certain things in life......

this is an interesting discussion.
but if you met me on some road and asked me "who are you?" , i would be very confused and you would only get a some vague answer from me, like,
"huh? er...i'm, i'm me."
that's what i would've said.
if i think about it, i would base my identity on my religion and my nationality, two things which are a very important part of my identity and define who i am, and the kind of reactions that i have, and the way i perceive things.
so i would say that i am a muslim and an indian.

One's identity should n't be confused with roles he/ she plays in life.
I am a human being and a representative of the Almighty on Earth. Yes. that's my identity, which matters the most, because I have to live with myself for almost all the time than with any one else.
Now, coming to roles I play, I am the son of my parents, brother of my siblings, a student in a school, an employee at work, a citizen of my country, and the list goes on...
The key to success in any role one plays in his/ her life is the awareness of self-identity.

I am from Germany. I am female. And I want to achieve/improve/create everything that makes my life worth living.
These are three main points, aren't they?

I'm Vi.
Sometime I suspect myself. If I weren't a girl scout, who I am? If I weren't a Vietnamese, who I am? If I weren't a Christian, who I am?...
But, I think, sometimes, people should ask themselves who they are. It reminds them of what their dreams are and have their dreams come true yet?
Know who you are, what you dream, how you do... it's a happiness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think" - Randy Pausch

This is an interesting topic. "Who are you" is such a broad question that can be answered by a variety of answers. And yet, it is a question that is often met with some hesitation before one answers.
As for me I am a mom and my family always comes first.

thank you all for your answers. it was so insightful to hear feedback from all around the world, to compare them and see how similarly the mind works no mattering in which point of the globe it is.
"The key to success in any role one plays in his/ her life is the awareness of self-identity"
says siddiq from india. i couldn't agree more- but, we use such different basis on which we build our self identity and such different prisms through which we approach it. in this thread we see many of them, mostly seen through roles- whether they are those in terms of personal relationships or relationships with their own countries- people define themselves as mothers, brothers, africans, germans- those who can pinpoint some aspects of it, and those are only a few. many never take the path of investigating oneself and out of those scarce couple, rare are those who finish it with success. oedipus paid a high price for gnōthi seauton, just as many do in real life.
what is the price you would pay to know thyself?
wilde said that only the shallow know themselves. perhaps this is the truth, perhaps we are not meant to know ourselves and our true identity inside and out- perhaps as vi said, it is in us to question and pursue answers for as long as we live and these question marks along the way is what push us forward to our dreams because in our constant strive for depth, we constantly seek more and more and push forward.
on the other hand, how can you reach for the stars if your feet are not set firmly on the ground with your own self? can you swim through the waters of life with storms within your own soul originating from not knowing what the inside of it holds?
can a flower grow if it has no roots? or are the roots exactly what keeps the flower bounded to the ground, not letting it cast about the sky as it could?

Hi Katarina,
Interesting question you have there. Identity is indeed a difficult thing. It exists of so many different parts. There are the roles you play depending on where you are, then there is your nationality, your religion, your morals, and probably much more.
Officially identity is in fact not how you perceive yourself but how others perceive you. There is a very intersting book from Goffman about that.
I recently wrote a paper on how even Facebook (or other social networksites) influence your identity, so they way you are perceived. My conclusion was that you can show more of yourself if you have multiple ways to show it, therefor the way people perceive you will be more in tune with how you feel about yourself.
To answer your question: I am myself, called Natalie, i'm eager to learn about people, cultures and interesting ideas, i love meeting new people, and there is a lot i wanna see of the world.
Since i dont believe in age or nationality (i dont feel my age and dutch doesnt capture what i know or feel), that is how i decided to describe myself.
Natalie
Ps. If you want to know more about my research you can send me a message.

hi. answering your question is very difficult because you can't really describe yourself; others will think of you in different ways.
Answering by name, or by religion is not the answer, but how you influence people around you and how you interact with them.
Describing myself in 3 words...(that's hard) All I can say about my identity is...
I'm a friend
Someone who you can rely on
and..
someone who never betrays..
That's my answer to your question..
