Why 2 usernames per user?

Hi,
I was just wondering: why does TakingITGlobal allow forum users to have two usernames? There is one username that doesn't change, which is displayed when a user edits a post. There is also a username that can be changed at any time, which is the main username displayed to others.
It's not a big deal, it's just a little strange and confusing to me, and seemingly unnecessary. Thanks!
