What students should teachers teach?
February 26, 2009 - 04:54 PM

In each classroom there will be a variety of students - students who understand the material on different levels, students who care about their courses to different degrees, etc. A teacher has the hard job of teaching everyone, which may be impossible. Who should the instructor focus lessons on? The struggling students? The "average" students? The exceptional ones? Why?
How can teachers reach all students equally?

I believe teachers should focus on all their students, when some students are struggling help them out, but still say good job or check up on the students who know what they are doing.

I think that teachers should teach to the average student but provide extra support to exceptional students and to students who are struggling. Students who are doing well, or are ahead of the class, need support and motivation to keep interested in school - this may mean extra projects related to the students' interests, looking for extracurricular opportunities for outside the classroom development or more difficult texts in certain classes (like novel studies). These students shouldn't be ignored because they are alright, if they get bored this could turn them off of school forever. Students that are struggling should also get the support of the teacher, especially in the form of one one help during individual work time. If the student continues to struggle then a plan should be made involving parents - extra revision to reinforce topics for example, to help the student get ahead. Its not sufficient to just teach to the lowest common denominator as so many schools are doing, that's the reason unprecedented numbers of students are falling through the cracks, both at the upper and lower ends of the academic scale.

I support your thoughts completely, your logic is very intelligent, and I believe that teachers should take on those responsibilities as educators as well.

Thank you both for your replies and insight! I agree with Daniella, and I think Nikki suggests a good plan for teachers to follow.

I think that a lot of education today is being "watered down." As students fail, school boards decrease the difficulty of education. This just creates a vicious cycle.
I also think a lot of failing and struggling students are pushed along from grade to grade. I have seen this in high schools. It was compounded by changes to the curriculum, though.
Sorry, that's a little off-topic. What do all of you think about these ideas? And are there more ways to expand on the original question?

Can you specify your question/ point concerning failing students...are you saying that each year the student goes to the next grade, the cycle repeats itself again (concerning failing a class or a grade.)

A student may struggle in one grade and be pushed to the next one. Then, because of being unprepared, that student struggles in the new grade, too (but is still pushed along).
I guess the other thing I mentioned isn't so much a circle. What I think has happened (in Ontario at least) is that the elementary school curriculum changed, making it harder when students get to high school. The high school curriculum changed, especially when Gr.13 was removed, and now high school students have difficulty in university. And now university curriculums are changing because of that..

Yes I am I currently a high school student and I would agree on that point about how the elementary prep. for middle school is in no use because the education has changed, and the same goes for middle school to high school and high school to university. I am a grade 12 student and I am actually staying a fifth year to try to prepare myself for University next year, in the fall.

Teachers should teach all their students, but it's the students' responsibility to go to their teacher and ask for help if they are struggling. I used have a teacher who was super dedicated to his work and stayed hours after school helping a group of us who wanted help. It would be like an after-school study session, and now that I don't have him as a teacher, I realized that he was one of my favorite teachers because he offered to help us and made study sessions, and did reach out to us, as compared to teachers waiting for you to ask them questions.
I really admire teachers who put a lot of effort into teaching all their students.

I believe that all of them should be given attention. While the exceptional students can be left to do their work on their own, they would need some " checking-up on " every once in awhile to make sure they're on the right track. The average students can be given enough attention so that they have a grasp of what is being thought. (Maybe then the exceptional students can help out the average students?) The weak students should not be left out. They should be given any amount of attention needed to help them cope with their average and exceptional peers so that they dont feel left out.
