Is gender still important today or should we get rid of the term once and for all?

Do you mean "sex" (e.g. male and female) when you talk about gender? Many people often confuse the difference between our "sex" which is biological and our "gender" which is completely socially constructed. Gender rather than sex is a more fluid identity that we can define and redefine over and over again--while our genes are much harder to change!

yeah, that is what I meant, sex male and female, biologically. Sorry.
Gender differentiation for any reason is not happening. It just doesn't make sense to me you know. Why?

I agree...it like just about any category used to divide people into distinct groups without any overlap. Maybe achieving gender equality will depend on how far the global human society moves away from their reliance on gender categorizations and gender-specific roles.

It is both necessary and unnecessary....necessary from the biological point of view and unnecessary from the social point of view that is indiscrimination to women interms of the gender...

Gender is an important issue that must be discussed. The misconception about gender must be discussed so that remedies can be obtained. When people are properly informed about gender then discrimination and certain hostility towards a particular sex can be rectified.

Cliff, in theory I think education about gender equality will help resolve discrimination on the basis of sex (gender); yet the choice to discriminate or not to discriminate is up to the individual in the end no matter how informed they are.

Challenging gender stereotypes can be lots of fun; I think it is important to recognize how assumptions about gender are built into our culture (through the media) and through our language. The nice thing is that we can now produce our own media and hopefully supplant these underlying themes with healthier more inclusive alternatives.
I feel as though the gender based distinctions we see in culture are not natural, but learned. When I worked at a daycare (itself a reversal of traditional roles), I used to have lots of fun encouraging young men (as young as 6 months ) to play in the kitchen area, and young women to play with cars and trucks and the like.
Obviously, there is still much work to be done, though I see the traditional gendered division blurring all the time.

Reversing gender roles or even making them more fluid for people to have more freedom to chose how they want to express their gender (if at all) will likely have the greatest impact on challenging the negative effects of gender-typing and stereotyping--but I hope that this discussion continues to welcome global voices to come to a more inclusive response to this issue.

Something to consider: there is a new theory circulating circulating that suggests gender is merely a construction of society. That is to say, we only differentiate between the female and male physicalities because it is ingrained in our cultures.
Personally, I am inclined to disagree with this theory for many reasons. The first being that even in natural settings--those without cultural constructs--the male and females have distinct physical differences and roles in the family. Take something as simple as the goldfinch--the male is bright yellow and the female is a ruddy brown. I find it unlikely that this distinction is merely a coincidence.
On a different note, I truly believe that there are certain differences in gender than cannot be ignored. Women are more inclined to nurture because they grow a child inside them; men are more inclined toward sport because their bodies are built for such a thing--they run faster, jump higher, and injure themselves less. Though I don't think gender should matter in the workplace or the home, I do think that there are inherent differences in the two sexes that we cannot ignore.

Indeed gender is important. If you didn't seperate the two groups, there would be things like males and females changing together (Not needed.) or using the same bathrooms. (Also not needed.) Gender difference is important for a multiitude of reasons, but the most important is that GIRLS AND GUYS ARE DIFFERENT. If it was something like Racial terms, (Black, Asian, White etc.) I could agree but you can't just group everyone. You need to be classified by something like that for political reasons, for lawful reasons. If the police are looking for a suspect, the description of gender is important. Gender inequality is another thing entirely. I would agree with that being abolished but gender is definitely needed.
