What are the main sustainable competitive advantages?

One of the challenges in any business is remaining competitive over a long period of time. You could have a great idea and get started, but what's to prevent someone else from copying you as soon as you start to become successful?
Any ideas out there on what factors could be sustainable competitive advantages?
Evan.

One of the major keys to creating sustainable competitve advantages, in my opinion, is celebrating your differences. For example, if you're small you're more flexible and can be more personal with customers. If you're young and don't have any experience than you have a fresh perspective. Often, what we think of as weaknesses can be turned into advantages if spun right.

Agreed!
I'm thinking price (although you never want to compete on price), brand, innovation (being different!), service, exclusivity, dedication, and marketing.

If you can successfully sell to a customer, I mean, having GREAT sales skills. This does not necessarily mean ripping people off, or excessive overcharge, you can often divert the customer's attention from price to what they need.
That is what customers want, for you to fulfill the need. Once you fulfill the need, price will follow and will not be as big of an objection.
If you know you need a computer, and your computer company adds value to the computer by offering on-site support once a month for the first year, that is added value, and the customer's need is fulfilled, and often price will not matter if it no excessive.

Those are all great points but I believe that understanding your customers is the most important. Keeping up with current trends and offering what people want is the biggest sustainable competitive advantage.
