Voip: The Telcos Are Next To Go

If you are reading this post you probably have a thing for technology. Maybe not as much as Kip from Napoleon Dynamite but at least a little.
Right now it is possible (through the genius of Skype) to make a call from your computer to another computer for FREE. All you need is a computer, mic, speakers and an internet connection (arguably this is your cost). This isn’t that new, although it would be cool if skype was integrated into TIG...
You can also pay minimal amounts of money to “Skypeout” and call mobile numbers and hardlines.
Now the truly interesting development has come out. Mobile VOIP is slowly becoming a huge threat to Telco companies like Rogers in Canada and I’m sure the same thing is happening in more advanced European countries and across Asia.
For example if you have an Iphone and you jail break it you can now make calls via the program Fring through your data plan or over a Wifi connection. Originally this was capable through a Wifi network but requires you to stay in one place to make the call. Now with the data flowing through your paid plan as long as there’s a connection you can make the call.
This is a huge blow to the knees of the Telcos. If you can afford to buy the hardware all you need to do is work with the software to make signing up for a cumbersome traditional voice plan irrelevant. You know…the 200 minute, only during the hours of 2 and 8, if calls are made on an odd minute they’re double, rounding up seconds type plans. Obviously I’m exaggerating here but you get the point that signing up for these things is like trying to find a spider web that matches your personality. And your phone habits often change faster then a phone plan can be adjusted. It is just inefficient.
This brings up the important point of our future in telecommunications. These giant companies obviously don’t want to destroy a viable revenue stream but the public will not let them stifle innovation forever. Eventually the consumers will get what they want because in this day in age we are in control.
Thoughts?
Cheers!

The electric car is a good example of something being played out right now. I am hopeful that I will witness a Ford style adoption of an alternative fueled vehicle.
On the Telco note. I think consumers should look closely at the plans offered for data devices. You will notice it is extremely difficult (if near impossible) to get a plan with only data (voice is always attached. At least their not training anyone to sell devices with a data only pitch.
