Questions about South Africa

I thought maybe I could enlist help if my questions were more focused. Specifically, I'd like to know the following:
1) What defines South Africa? For instance, people unfamiliar with the US might think that car accidents and cancer, or apple pie and cowboys, define America. People unfamiliar with South Africa might think the epidemic rate of AIDS or conflict diamonds define S.A.
2) How do the 4 different ethnic groups ~ namely, Nguni, Sotho, Shangaan-Tsonga, and Venda ~ combine (or don't) in South Africa? The U.S. example for this is that, even though segregation was abolished in 1964, blacks and whites still tend to congregate separately within their own neighborhoods, black or white dominated schools, and also blacks who are professionals and make something of themselves (like President Obama) are accused of trying to act white.
3) Can you expand a little on the different religious groups and what makes up their own set of values?
4) What about the use of "witch doctors" for AIDS treatments as opposed to medical doctors? What beliefs might make people prefer the "witch doctors"?
5) Why is the inequality between the sexes so important for S.A.'s to maintain? Is it a power thing with males? And how did it get to be that way?
6) How does the Westernization of S.A. culture affect the people who want to cling to traditional culture? Is it different between large cities and villages?
I hope someone reading this post can answer even one of my questions; anything would help.
Thank you,
a struggling student
