How Much Should We Protect Intellectual Property?

There's no doubt that to a degree intellectual property needs to be protected for certain businesses. But to what degree?
This is a battle that is raging and laws have been slow to adapt. Considering the speed of information delivery the Internet has brought to our world and the slow process of law making how do we cope?
If we look at the benefits brought about from Wikipedia, open source and peering I feel society is undeniably better off.
Focusing on the future of collaboration what industry will be next to feel the pressures of competition from leagues of volunteer contribution or effective sharing?
I feel that if society can organize itself to do one thing better together than a single company than that should be embraced and even funded.
Maybe government should start looking at ways in which the collaboration movement can help monitor the pulse of its people? Any suggestions?
Cheers!

well this is old news, but file sharing of music and movies.
i think time will tell when new technologies come out that will enable users to become producers and creators.
