What does it mean to be a global village?

We often look at the world as a global village a collective community. But how do we as youth ensure that we are supporting this same idea? How can we be a part of this global village? What does this global village imply, in the responsibilities of all its citizens? (all 60.2 billion of us)
So, What does it mean to be a global village?

Hello David,
If I may, I would like to put this question to our digital society class in our local High School here in Gisborne New Zealand and get them to reply directly to you at some stage during February.
I believe that my country sometimes because it is an Island Nation can feel very cut off from our responsiblity to contribute to the global village tapestry.
By contributing positively to the Global Village even in the form of a simple hello we raise understanding of ourselves among those who are different and may help in preventing future wars.
