[Poll] What's the Fight against CORRUPTION?
January 2, 2009 - 08:49 AM

[b]I listened to an interview of the past Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Ken Nnamani on OneonOne, a TV programme today.

Talking about corruption, he mentioned certain point which i totally agreed with and would like to get the view of others. The Nigerian government keeps on talking about fighting corruption. this war against corruption has been on for some years now, but how many scapegoats do we have locked up in cells for such misconduct and misdeeds? Or how is the Nigerian government fighting corruption, with no scapegoats to serve as detterents to others? What is your own view of fighting corruption in the Nigerian context? In your own view, how would you fight corruption?

The first step in the fight against corruption is to ensure that the people are educated about what corruption is and the effects that it has. There should guidelines provided for in the constitution and with an efficient police or judicial system to ensure that the offenders fill the full wrath of the law. This should start with top govt officials who in most cases are the most culprits. These should be made an example of. History has shown that in most cases when the boss is corrupt so will his juniors. The only way to fight corruption is to name and shame those responsible and develop transparent systems of governance at all levels.

But when all is said and done, remember that the fight against corruption starts with us as individuals. If we the people are willing to stand in line wait for our turn and follow normal procedures to get service, we will all be playing our part for the fight against corruption….

The matter of corruption is what I think one of the top issues in the African political agenda. Corruption has invaded most African countries and acts like a cancer affecting societies at all levels. The important thing we should focus on now is how to fight it EFFICIENTLY.
I am not from Nigeria, but I feel concern about this article because in my country also, corruption prevails and prevents a real development towards democracy and freedom.
People, especially the youth (because they represent the future), need to be educated on the disastrous impact of this disease in the society. Poverty for example, is, in a lot of cases enhances by corruption. Hopefully they will understand and realize that in order to have a brighter future, they HAVE to change things. This fight has to be done at all levels; even small bribes have to be punished for example. To not sanction means to accept and when it’s accepted, it becomes normal. Why our leaders are not ashamed to be openly corrupted? It’s because, not only they know they will never get punished but also, because they are now unable to draw the line between honesty and corruption. The scariest part is the fact that it becomes normal. The more you steal, the more respected you are, the more glory you’ll get unfortunately at the expense of poor people.

However, in Africa, the solving of the equation is more complicated for so many reasons. The weight of our historical past combined to economic factors and the harsh law of international politics creates unhelpful conditions to eradicate this disease completely. But we should not give up, we have to stand and claim more transparency, promote good governance, EDUCATE people and make them understand that corruption makes a country moving backward, punish crimes with the law. It will be a long fight, but it’s not a hopeless one. Our continent is still young, we have a lot to learn but, we can attempt to reach certain goals and I am sure we will one day. Let’s work on it now!

The events Happening in the post Ribadu era is obvious even to the blind that the government of Nigeria is not serious about fighting corruption.
The manner of the plea bargain EFCC entered with former Edo governor;Lucky Igbenedion and how the trial eventually ended is a slap on the intelligence of Nigerians and an affront to common sense.
Corruption seem to be on the increase under this government.
Recently the Attorney General was accused of collecting bribe of 30m dollars for the justices that sat on the presidential election appeal. The AG threatened to sue the publishers of the story civily and criminally, till date he couldnt. This perhaps explains some iota of truth in the story.
With the way we are going about it we will never overcome this monster. Except and untill we change our approach.
The greater part of this change lies with the government because government officials are the biggest culprits.

In my opinion change must start with the citizens, if you and I are not willing to take a bribe and excersise citizens arrest. Sensitisation to the people, about the short and long term effects of corruption on the economy, In many instances people are bribed because they become short sighted and look at their bellies today without thinking about the future, or just greedy. In this case of leaders being the worst culprits,if citizens are educated enough then they will put the leaders to task and answerable to all their deeds, but our leaders have deliberatly ignored the aspect of giving an education to the people on sensitive issues beacause they want to keep us in darkness to have no one putting them to task. In Zambia, we have cases of high profile figures like former president Chiluba's case with his colleagues of money plander which is clear the men stole tax payers money but upto now the judicial system is still dillydarling the case. Some are just sentensed on paper to prison and act in front of the camera as if they are entering prison gates, they show on state TV, the following day you meet them driving porsch cars thats just the kind of Africa we live in.
Educate everbody change the mindset, have sense of ownership of this continent, and be positive.

Lets make Africa a better place to stay....
