HIV increase among youth
December 29, 2008 - 05:55 PM
|
|
Since the outbreak of HIV in Panama in 1984 I have been involved in the process of counseling and treatment.
Panamanian people infected with HIV are given the appropriate anti-retroviral medication.
Nevertheless, the number of people infected is increasing.
The same goes with most countries in the world. And it is affecting the young productive generation.
Is it ignorance, a false sense of security due to medications where they are available, or is it plain irresponsibility?

down here in Nigeria the sread of the disease has been on an increase in an alarming rate in most parts of the country with new cases occuring in youths between the ages of 15-35. in my point of view i believe the increase is due to carelessness on the part of the individuals and robably ignorance in few cases because adequate information on the disease has been sent out

Are there NGOs that work on prevention about HIV?
School prevention clubs seem to work pretty well, though I don't know if you have them functioning in Nigeria. I would like to know.
Thank you.
Happy New Year, too

Maybe its just plain irresponsibility. And unfettered promiscuity that is rapidly spreading the virus.

Yes, unfortunately, I tend to agree with the irresponsibility factor, or which promiscuity is a variable.
Thanks for your comment.

Here in Cambodia the Government and NGO's have been successful at slowing the rate of infection dramatically through public education campaigns, billboards, posters, TV advertisements and a presence at all major community events. Thailand has also successfully lowered the rate of infection.
I have read some articles about their strategies if you want to look them up?
Do you have anything on such a grand scale, or just school and smaller community based campaigns?

You have a good discussion going here, but I'm going to move this thread to our 'Health and Wellness' forum. As the Current Events discussion forum is meant for discussing more of-the-moment events, situations, etc.

As a peer education trainer in Nigeria i have come to understand that peer pressure and influence a major cause of HIV increase among youths.

I saw some cases of people who know other that were infected with HIV thanks to unprotected sexual relations. So, before observing the increase of the number of youngs infected we should start some education campaigns regarding the sexual education.

We have several NGOs working on HIV prevention. The main one is dedicated especially to people already infected.
But, we do not have a national education plan because this was included into what was called National Program of Sexual and Reproductive Health, which was "sunk" by the Christian churches in Panama.
And, yes, peer pressure is very important among the youth.

HIV/AIDS
A young child, standing by the side of the doorway, using the palm to wipe the tears of another child crying. A woman appeared from the dark way shouting, bad and shameless parents of yours! hey my son, don’t touch him!! He may even spread it to you, and you leave now, get out!! Get out at once!!
The crying boy took some steps off toward the footpath, and headed toward the refuse dump with tears across the cheeks. He stopped suddenly and wiped his tears, slowly he started asking himself questions, who was AIDS? Was he a policeman, why did he arrested my parents and what did my parent do? If not my grandmother, who would have given me food? Where would I stay? I will ask her again to show me where my parents are, so I can go to them and ask them why people treat me this way.
STIGMATISATION
This is one of the most dangerous tags given to PLWA who are either parents or their children. The suffering of the young child through discrimination makes him ask such terrible questions. The parents could have been in the hospital or dead or quarantined. The questions he asks really shows the rejection he faces as a result of the misconception of HIV/AIDS. The popularity of AIDS and their unknown means of transmission.
This incident eventually happened in a community I visited to discuss about how to live with PLWA. Imagine how my discussion went.
The real truth is; ask yourself even you the advocate, the health advisor, how you feel when you meet PLWA and please keep the answers in your head.
Well I need financial help to solve some of these problems in my community please visit our website http://yiaicd.synthasite.com and help us any amount you can to help solve such situation for the stigmatization is equally at strength with the popularity.
The little you do to day will never be forgotten in the minds and believe and happiness as wells as smiles of others who benefited. Thank you

There are excellent points in this discussion. I urge you to see www.trueaidscure.com and discover for yourselves some facts about treatments that the media including the New England Journal of Medicine are deliberately hiding.
