How can we build strong communities?
December 18, 2008 - 10:36 PM

What is needed to build strong communities locally, nationally, and globally? What are we doing well or poorly now? (Thanks!)

what is needed to build a strong community locally, nationally and even internationally s simply good leadership.smile

we have to develop a good leadership system if we are to have a strong community. Look in the case of African countries say Zimbabwe, the people are suffering simply because of the leader who is weak hence forth making the world country weak.

We i can appreciate from other people and sites is that they are working to train good leaders for a better tomorrow.

I am very interested in what people around the world have to say on this topic. I am researching what it takes to build a strong, sustainable community in my home town in the US.
I certainly agree that a strong element of leadership is needed, but beyond that it is important to educate as many people in each community as possible on what it means to live in the radically shifting age of information. Without a widespread knowledge and belief in community structure, in the strength the locals, it is not possible to build up a powerful community.
I am curious to know: What do you feel community is? How do you define it?
I'd love to hear from anyone willing to answer this question. smile

Rosalind

I agree with you both that strong leadership is important. I think that we can expand on this, though. What are the qualities of a good leader? What does a good leader do to improve the community?

From my POV, this is a good idea because it helps the population to be aware of current issues. I think that a requirement for a strong community is that the people have to band together to solve local and external problems. Being aware of the problems is the first step. Caring about the problems is the second. Figuring out how to solve the problems, and acting to solve them is next. For that you would need communication between the people, goals for things you want to change, and methods for achieving those goals.

Why are you researching this? (just curious)

That's one reason, actually: because I'm curious. Curious to see what it is that makes a strong community, and in the process, learn something about the development of different cultures. Researching... kind of a funny word for just taking a stab at understanding community consciousness, so maybe I'd revise that. I'm educating myself on the possibilities of sustainable, interdependent living. I'm starting this youth org that's aimed at educating youth on localizing economies and what it means to live in a strong, sustainable community. I figure it's a good way to start by looking into the many examples for a strong community, especially the ones that are living in a post-oil, sustainability-conscious way.

From personal experiences working in remote communities in Western Australia, we need to build a sense of pride within our communities, we need our community members to know that where they live, work and play is theres.... This goes on to create a sense of empowerment!!!

Then people with a good message of pride will empower others to join in this pride and will empower more and so on and so on!

I do agree with great leadership to begin this process, as people empower more people and so on and so on this is where governments will take note and from there the bigger picture! However i am aware its not that easy but its a start big grin

I feel empowerment is the key!
