Globalization and compassion
December 16, 2008 - 02:24 PM

Yes, in some economic term or another we are all connected. The world has not become uniform, that is not the meaning of globalization, but we have all become connected.

This brings up a serious question. How do we act compassionately towards people that we don't know, interact with, care for all the while maintain the level of health, safety and culture that we have today?

The butterfly effect is a reality (to a certain extent) in the wealthy parts of the world. What we consume now comes from all over the globe. What we waste is smeared all over the globe. The wealth generated from our consumption is mismanaged and concentrated in corrupt greedy hands.

Our generation, meaning everyone alive today, is stuck with this moral dilemma. We love our freedom, our level of safety, wealth and health. But it is all coming at a price. Unfortunately that price is hidden. So what to do?

Is there a solution that is best for all, or should we stay the course and wait to see who wins this big global game of winner takes all?

You make a good point that we are all connected. Humankind has always been interconnected yet is only in our modern world that we can see it as proven. We are in this together. The first problem we face is the narcotic effect of greed. It seems more difficult to control than heroin addiction.

The hidden price is only hidden by the media, anyone with an honest approach can see there is never a free lunch. Every action has a reaction.

I feel we must stop bullshitting each other and openly declare the cost we are imposing at an ever increasing rate on mother earth. In no way can we wait to see the consequences of uncontrolled human greed, we all know what these consequences are.

Revealing the hidden costs of our consumption and harnessing the philanthropic power of our daily choices is the goal of an organization I've been involved in: Avoid.net

The site acts as a counterpoint to advertising, allowing citizens to provide feedback and collect information about the social and environmental implications of various products and companies.

I will be using TIG as a platform to grow this venture and would greatly appreciate your feedback and input.
Cheers,
Liam

Before full scale globalization, maybe there was lesser pollution, far less corruption and quite a lot of people in third world countries were poor and hungry. With globalization, there is more pollution, so much of corruption and people are still hungry and poor. But then, in developing countries, many people now have the opportunity to earn a living and possibly come out of poverty because of globalization. Looks like we're going in a circle.A greenpeace video highlighted how xtremely hazardous electronic waste from developed countries is recycled in Pakistan and the metals extracted from the waste. Its ironic that if you stop the wstes being dumped, you stop someone's livelihood, because often, there are no other jobs.

Its tough to have one straight answer to your question. But, maybe, stopping excessive consumption, because , as we all know, the more you consume, more resources are utilized, and more waste is generated. Also creating communities or being part of one where we help each other out.
