I do not doubt your designating these activities as scams, Laura, but could you give us more information about how to recognize these scams?
I was looking for volunteering in Africa and also encountered an AIDS organization that didn't quite smell unlike a rat...
I finally decided to fill out an application for Medicins Sans Frontieres.

Sometimes it's not so obvious - but in this case the event that this 'organization' is promoting fits several of the points on TIG's 'Guide to Detecting Fraudulent Events' - I can't stress enough for ALL TIG members to read through this guide. Many of the questions TIG staff get asked about detecting fraud are answered by this Guide. It is available permanently on the Events homepage.
The organization name itself is also a big indicator - World Humanitarian Organization, or WHO - might get confused for some people with the legitimate organization the World Health Organization. Also the e-mail addresses of the contacts for the orgs are @gmail and @usa e-mail addresses, which are free web-based accounts that anyone could sign up for. Organizations usually have their own e-mail addresses.
