I voted Water because I think that even though this subject isn't greatly mediatised, it still a critical one. In fact, people in Africa are dying because of lacking of water and on the other hands, North Americans do little to stop their wasting. I visited Europe by the past and I've been greatly inspired by what they do to preserve water.
Now, I have to say this: if we want to make changes, the first thing is to set up a price, and not every price: it has to be expensive. In fact, it has been shown that people tend to waste when the price is not significant but they'll as soon as the price goes up!

Passive solar design is a very overlook solution to many of our energy problems. A properly designed building should not require heating and cooling. With some of the new "solar Shingles" on the roof They may even produce more power than they use. They are pricy but that should come down as the demand goes up.The new LED lights are a good easy solution. thay use very little power and last a very long time.
Greenhouses attached to the south side of homes will help to heat and extend growing season. There are a lot of new solutions in the works.
If you take up the study of passive solar has been around for a very long time. Some of the cliff dwellings of the south west are fine examples!

I confess I am a newbie to this topic as well. As a budding entrepreneur, I am very much interested in learning more about sustainable development. By subscribing to this discussion board, I hope, I can get valuable input.
I would like to recommend to the moderators that the discussion forum should begin with a set of clearly defined objectives. This would ensure valuable input from participants.
Sustainable development as I understand is, in very simple terms – economic development but also environmental preservation – climate, natural resources and habitat. The world resources are scarce and limited. As more and more countries develop, it puts a stress on our natural resources and our already worsening climate. Unless clean energy sources and renewable resources are actively promoted and utilized, we are heading towards an ecological disaster.
It is a highly relevant and vital issue of our time.

Hi All,
I have been researching on Sustainable energy and development and i would like to list this two sites - although i am not quite sure how resourceful these portals are.
1. http://www.sustainable-economy.org/
2. http://sustainablebusinessincubator.com/
Both these sites were listed on the Development Gateway newsletter. I would highly recommend members to subscribe and be a part of this great organization. It has tons of relevant and useful and up-to-date information.
http://www.developmentgateway.org/
Cheers !

Hello all,
I think when we talk about energy, we should not only think about renewable energy (although, of course, very important), but about actually how to curb energy consumption.
New inventions, technologies and products compose one factor for improvement. I believe, however, that in the end, what determines our sustainability is our capacity to reduce consumption and reflect our own behavior:
- eating local food
- using our bikes and feet
- turning off electronic devices when not in use
- reduce consumption
etc.

I'm campaigning to prevent climate change and have made the following video to create awareness.
Watch it and please RATE it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs7aZ4KIL3k
Also pass it on to other like-minded individuals who want to change the world for the better.

When we look it up in the wikipedia [link="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_development"], we find this:
Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for future generations. The term was used by the Brundtland Commission which coined what has become the most often-quoted definition of sustainable development as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Sustainable development ties together concern for the carrying capacity of natural systems with the social challenges facing humanity. As early as the 1970s "sustainability" was employed to describe an economy "in equilibrium with basic ecological support systems." Ecologists have pointed to The Limits to Growth, and presented the alternative of a “steady state economy” in order to address environmental concerns.
The field of sustainable development can be conceptually broken into three constituent parts: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and sociopolitical sustainability.
