Change in Young Offenders Act (Canada)
August 16, 2003 - 02:40 AM

Hi everyone:
I am no longer classified as a "youth", although I greatly value young persons perspectives, both personally, professionaly.

At Operation Springboard, I work with youth, age 12 - 18 years of age, providing crime prevention information, as well as alternatives to custody for first time non-violent young offenders. As well, I work with youth that have experienced bullying, sexual harrassment, and many other violations.

The Young Offenders Act (Y.O.A) changed to the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y.C.J.A) on April 1st (ironic?) of this year.

There are a number of issues that have proved quite contraversial.

One being, alternatives to custody, through skills-based programs. Many feel this is just a "slap on the wrist", while others feel it is far more pro-active than sending the youth to jail for a few weeks.

I want to know what people around the world think about the justice system, as well as your thoughts of an skills-based program for at-risk youth (both victim & perpetrator). What methods do you feel would be effective to assist youth that have possibly "dabbled" in at-risk behaviours (ie break and enter, bullying, etc). How about the victims? What skills-based methods do your feel would be effective?

It is so important for this program to be meaningful...not for the facilitators, for the audience. Opinions? Insights? Any comments would be very much appreciated.
Thanks so much
Springboard
