Suspension of Parliament
December 5, 2008 - 12:43 AM

It's been quite the week here in Canada. Last Thursday our Finance Minister presented an economic update. It contained some measures designed to save money including the cancellation of a $1.95/vote subsidy, and a wage freeze on the public service- but no stimulus package.

Furious with the government, the opposition (Liberals, New Democratic Party) have announced they have lost confidence in the government and formed a coalition. The coalition backed by the Bloc Quebecios is supposed to replace the government after a vote of non-confidence, which was set to happen on Monday.

In our system, if a minority government loses the confidence of the House the Governor-General can either dissolve Parliament calling new elections, or ask the leader of the official opposition if they can form a government. Unfortunately, the Prime Minister forestalled both possibilities by asking for a porougation (suspension) of Parliament which was granted until January 26th of next year.

This was a historic first- the privilage of suspending parliament is usually saved for after a government has finished the session's business. This time it was used to stop Monday's confidence votes which Harper would have certainly lost.

It feels like all that was granted today was a stay of execution. I think Prime Minister Harper's career is over. Thanks to this last week the atmosphere in the House of Commons is poisoned beyond recovery. The opposition is still vowing to bring down the Conservatives at their first opportunity. The only hope for a permanent end to this mess, is another election with hopefully 3 brand new federal party leaders. Personally I'd rather have that election, than have a government that's backed by known sepratists.

And that's what's been going on here for the last week... thoughts anyone?

I think one point here is very important.

The Bloc are not Seperatists but Quebec Nationalists. And they will not be pushing their agenda, as they have signed an 18 month accord stating this. All I can say is thank goodness for the bloc. Without the getting so many of Quebec's seats we would surely have had a Conservative Majority.

I can't believe that Parliament is not going to reconvene until January 26th. Things need to be worked on... the no confidence vote should have taken place or they should have all been forced to take the long and painful road, sitting in a room full of people who have different ideas, but who hopefully all want a strong, free, amazing Canada.
