Human Interaction and work

Interesting that few of the threads seem to discuss what I thought the discussion was meant to look at- which is the actual nature of the workplace...
I work in Local Government in the UK and recently ran focus groups on the issue.
All of them cited that in rough order of preference people preferred to interact with the council in the following ways:
1. Face 2 Face
2. Telephone
3. E-mail/Website
These being the main options. We benefit from a relatively affluent area with high levels of Internet access, though some concerns were raised and none of the participants were aware of the Local Government website (but then it wasn't well advertised!).
Interestingly they felt that the Council should KEEP a central administrative function to allow THEM to contact all services in one place, and the staff to network!
They felt that it was the only way the Council Staff could talk to each other and be aware....
So Homeworking for us- although we might consider it, is out for now.
More interestingly, as we already own the buildings it is not proving cost effective as we'd have to buy a fax, computer, printer and telephone for EVERY member of staff who worked from home rather than sharing!
The only other option is small 'local clusters of workers' an interesting thought though- best of both worlds?
Regards
Allan
