How Much do you believe in 'Faith' and 'Fate'

I am a practicing Christian; a Catholic and an ex-seminarian. As far as I am concerned, there are certain things that I cannot hope to happen or come about just because I have 'faith.' The simplest explamation I have in a nutshell is that I cannot just 'have faith' and hope that 1 + 1 is not going to be 2 but something else. I take it as an excuse for lazy people to continue in their slumber.
I know of a man who started a business (he was into supplies). After sometime, the business died away and he was after his in-laws saying that they are evil. On a closer look, we found out that this man supplied a commodity that the community he was in didn't not need. It was obvious that the business cannot thrive for there are no customers but he went out of his way to attribute is to spiritual powers and forces.
When matters of faith come up we'll know. Matters like the existence of heaven and things that for some reason or the other we cannot explain.

Ok, S.Ojeremen. Assuming you are from an examination of 3 three objective questions with definite answers and you are so nervous you cannot even say whether you will do well or not.
Some moments later, when you collect yourself and think back on the preparation and the exam itself; what do you think will make you say 'ah, i'm going to pass this exam':
1. Because yo believe and have faith in God and you have prayed to pass.
2. Because you know you prepared well for the exam and actually gave the answer to the questions.

sleemfish: I agree with your thoughts and analogy. A lot of hard work is required to accomplish anything in life. Faith will not do the hard work for you. You do have to have faith that, if you are doing the right thing, you will get positive results from your actions. (But if you truly do your best, you shouldn't worry...)
There's a relevant story that I love:
A young little girl stood at the street corner begging for food, money or whatever she could get. Now this girl was wearing very tattered clothes; she was dirty and quite disheveled.
Everyday, a rich young man passed that corner without giving the girl a second look. But when he returned to his expensive home one day, his thoughts returned to the young girl and he became very angry at God for allowing such conditions to exist.
He reproached God, saying, "How can you let this happen? Why don't you do something to help this girl?"
Then he heard God respond by saying, "I did. I created You!"
(I borrowed, and edited, that passage from here: http://www.inspirationalstories.com/1/147.html)

I am an atheist, as such people assume I have no faith and that I am spiritually unfulfilled. But I do have faith, I have faith in humanity.
I trust that people will ultimately support one an other just as a christian belives god will support his people.
To me life is a balance between working for one an other, and working for ones self.
------EDIT---------
I found this and thought it would entertain the other side of this discussion. It is what Jesus did to pass the time while he had to wait forever for that portrait to be done.

I have faith, definitely. What I'm saying is that we need to draw a line between uncertainty/faith viz-a-viz our ability to reach at calculated results.
I believe God gave us the power of reasoning for a purpose. I think he knew that if we were to depend on him for everything, in the name of faith (instead of working things out for ourselves, even Himself may be pissed off. Just like the beautiful analogical story cited above, several things are within our reach. The guy could help the beggar and he overlooked it and faced God (in other words faith) for an answer whereas he could have solved the problem.
We need faith, but our reasoning can help us solve nearly all our day to day life questions and concerns. When matters of faith crop up I'm sure we'd one way or the other figure out that reason can't help here, at least not totally.
