YouthLearn Guide
December 18, 2001 - 12:08 PM

"The YouthLearn Guide" is designed to help after-school and in-school programs create and implement high-quality, technology-enriched learning activities. After seven years of fieldwork, the Morino Institute has joined with Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) to release the 160-page guide. Educators, youth development professionals, and others will find hands-on lessons, worksheets, and sample activities that have proven effective at inspiring young people's curiosity and creativity.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of America and PowerUP have already arranged to share "The YouthLearn Guide" with thousands of their technology-enriched sites across the country. Information about ordering the guide is at http://www.youthlearn.org/guide.

Ultimately, EDC seeks to establish a national center of excellence on youth, learning, and technology anchored around YouthLearn's guide, online community, and training opportunities.

Summer IT camps for girls and young women in Canada.
March 1, 2002 - 12:42 PM

SCWIST Global-Connect projects

The Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) is sponsoring summer IT camps for girls and young women in Canada. The camps will focus on Internet skills, web page design and Flash Animation. In addition, the program will include "Global-Connect" projects that will enable young women in Canada to connect with young women in Uganda who are also learning IT skills to share progress, dreams and stories of their lives. We are looking for community centers, NGOs or schools in Uganda that would be interested in participating in this program.

The global-connect projects will be one-week summer camps. The approach will be to establish online discussion forums with topics of interest to both the participants in Canada and Uganda. The general theme for the discussions is the empowerment of girls in science and technology, gendering IT, a global look at ICTs and the importance of women in leadership across all areas of ICT policy and practice.

Ugandan schools/NGOs/community centers interested in participating should inform us by March 31, 2002.

Manual for young people on designing CD-ROMs
March 23, 2002 - 04:46 AM

UNESCO Office in Bangkok issues a manual for young people to design a CD-ROM on HIV/AIDS

March 12, 2002 - UNESCO firmly believes, that across the globe, young people are at the forefront of an information revolution. The rapidly expanding possibilities of the computer age are creating new opportunities to entertain, enlighten and inspire. This is why the Communication Information UNESCO Office of Bangkok has issued a handbook providing the building blocks and knowledge for young people to design multimedia CD-ROMs on HIV/AIDS. It shows how colour, sound, pictures, video and other multimedia elements can be used to effectively pass on your message.

At the same time, information can get lost in a sea of confusing sound, video, animation and text. This is why the handbook sets out the principles of Mind Mapping to help in designing multimedia CD-ROM. This system enables individuals to digest large amounts of information almost effortlessly, and then formulate the best way to get this information across to the end users of the CD-ROM.

As every multimedia project needs a topic or theme, the handbook concentrates on the vital issue of HIV/AIDS and provides the information needed to design a CD-ROM aimed at educating other young people about AIDS. However, the same principles could be applied to any other topic and used to create original and innovative multimedia projects.

It looks like the manual should be available through the publications section of http://www.unescobkk.org/cominfo/index.htm . However, the PDF link to it (http://www.unescobkk.org/cominfo/pdf/mindmap.pdf) is 404ing at the moment. I'll drop them a note and see if they can fix the problem.

Youth Tech Support in Schools
June 12, 2002 - 04:24 AM

Well... the survey data is now available from the US and the results shouldn't surprise anyone in this group:

"Of the school districts surveyed, 54 percent reported that students were providing technical support for their districts. In 43 percent of districts, students troubleshoot for hardware, software and other problems, it said. Thirty-nine percent of districts said students set up equipment and wiring, and nearly as many districts report that students perform technical maintenance."

For more details on how students are leading in the use of IT in their schools, see http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/news/3402608.htm

It also looks like UNESCO has finally put up a press release on this at http://portal.unesco.org/ci/ev.php?URL_ID=6998&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201&reload=1042738228 (evil URL)

You can also skip straight to http://www.unescobkk.org/ips/ebooks/documents/mindmapping2/mindmapping2.htm to download the whole book
