well, of course human were inherently good, when Human were made by GOD the angels asked the GOD almighty that " we are your servants and we do prayers to you all our life without a pause, so why is there a need for Humans? they will do wrong things in this on earth !? then the GOD Almighty answered that " the Humans have evil within them and a good human will not use the evil deeds rather will do my worship and do good deeds"

so i think human beings were more interesting for god just coz they have evil within but they shouldnt do evil deeds..

This is a question that has been bothering me for a long time. In the end, I decided that human beings are neither inherently good, nor evil - we are simply social creatures shaped by the society around us. If society treats "evil" things as being normal, we will also think they are normal. Being social creatures means that we have a need to belong to a larger community. As such, we acquire the values and beliefs of that larger community.

Inherently, I think we are a clean page that has not been written on. But I suppose, since "good" is partially defined as the lack of evil, one could argue that my clean page theory is the same as saying that we are inherently good.

As you can see, I still haven't quite figured it out smile

From a philosphical point of view, I think that to get an idea of different opinions one should look at:
- Plato
-Aristotle
- Rousseau
- Karl Marx

I learnt about the theories from these theorists in my philosphy class and I found their explanations/views on human nature to be very interesting and thought provoking.

Can’t get your definition quite well! Hold on, I will think about it and reply you later.

I think it is not fair to label people as either "good" or "evil". No person is completely good or evil, and if you look closely enough you can see both sides to a person.

I also believe that people who are generally considered evil are those who do actions that benefit themselves while hurting others. They may not realize how their actions hurt others, or they may not care...or they may not have a choice.

People who are good are those who are selfless and who care about improving the lives of others (while improving their own). They are aware of the effects their actions have on others, and they follow the Golden Rule, "Do onto others as you wish done onto you".

Some people may think that a certain amount of selfishness is needed in order to survive. I think that if we work together we can still achieve prosperity for everyone - I'm idealistic like that...

I agree - if someone does something "evil", then it is also a reflection on something that society has done to influence that person. Society usually puts all the blame on the individual, however...

If you have time, can you please summarize their theories that you found most useful or relevant?

That's a very wise point and is very relevant to TakingITGlobal! The "Golden Rule" assumes that what is best for me is also best for you, which is not necessarily true. The Mexican boy's platinum rule reminds us that we also have to take into account who the other person is - what their culture and even their personality is.
